Regulators of G protein signaling (RGS) proteins modulate G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling networks by terminating signals produced by active Gα subunits. RGS17, a member of the RZ subfamily of RGS proteins, is typically only expressed in appreciable amounts in the human central nervous system, but previous works have shown that RGS17 expression is selectively upregulated in a number of malignancies, including lung, breast, prostate, and hepatocellular carcinoma.

Mice expressing a C-terminal fragment of the prion protein instead of wild-type prion protein die from massive neuronal degeneration within weeks of birth. The C-terminal region of PrPc (PrP121–231) expressed in these mice has an intrinsic neurotoxicity to cultured neurones. Unlike PrPSc, which is not neurotoxic to neurones lacking PrPc expression, PrP121–231 was more neurotoxic to PrPc-deficient cells. Human mutations E200K and F198S were found to enhance toxicity of PrP121–231 to PrP-knockout neurones and E200K enhanced toxicity to wild-type neurones.

BTG/Tob family proteins, which are characterized by similarities in their N-terminal BTG/Tob homology domains, control cell growth negatively. Among the BTG/ Tob family members, BTG2/TIS21/PC3 proteins have been reported to have short lives and to be degraded by the proteasome. However, the mechanisms regulating the stabilities of other BTG/Tob family proteins have not yet been clarified.

A gene having high sequence homology (45–49%) with the glycerol-1-phosphate dehydrogenase gene from Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum was cloned from the aerobic hyperthermophilic archaeon Aeropyrum pernix K1 (JCM 9820). This gene expressed in Escherichia coli with the pET vector system consists of 1113 nucleotides with an ATG initiation codon and a TAG termination codon. The molecular mass of the purified enzyme was estimated to be 38 kDa by SDS/PAGE and 72.4 kDa by gel column chromatography, indicating presence as a dimer....

Binding of lamin B receptor (LBR) to chromatin was studied by means of an in vitro assay system involving recombinant fragments of human LBR and Xenopus sperm chromatin. Plant cell wall proteins called expansins are thought to disrupt hydrogen bonding between cell wall polysaccha-rides without hydrolyzing them. We describe here a novel gene with sequence similarity to plant expansins, isolated from the cellulolytic fungus Trichoderma reesei. The pro-tein named swollenin has an N-terminal fungal type cel-lulose binding domain connected by a linker region to the expansin-like domain.

The induction of the heat shock response as well as its termination is auto-regulated by heat shock protein activities. In this study we have investi-gated whether Hsp90 functional protein levels influence the characteristics and duration of the heat shock response. Treatment of cells with several benzoquinone ansamycin inhibitors of Hsp90 (geldanamycin, herbimycin A) activated a heat shock response in the absence of heat shock, as reported previously.

The COP9 signalosome (CSN) occurs in all eukaryotic cells. It is a regula-tory particle of the ubiquitin (Ub)⁄26S proteasome system. The eight sub-units of the CSN possess sequence homologies with the polypeptides of the 26S proteasome lid complex and just like the lid, the CSN consists of six subunits with PCI (proteasome, COP9 signalosome, initiation factor 3) domains and two components with MPN (Mpr-Pad1-N-terminal) domains.
