One of the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) that has made some progress, albeit slow, is MDG 5: Improve maternal health. The two targets for assessing MDG 5 are reducing the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) by three quarters between 1990 and 2015, and achieving universal access to reproductive health by 2015. The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General has launched the Global strategy for women’s and children’s health, to mobilize commitments by governments, civil society organizations and development partners to accelerate progress towards MDGs 4 and 5 (1).

As discussed above, the HSA first assessed Uganda‟s health system by each of the six building blocks – providing findings, including strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats for each building block. Next, the HSA consolidated the building block-specific findings and analyzed cross-cutting issues that emerged across the building blocks (health system-wide issues) and presented cross-cutting findings. Based on these, the last chapter of the report provides recommendations for strengthening the Ugandan health system. These are listed and summarized here at a high level only.

Now is the time to align CHWs with broader health system strengthening efforts at the primary care level, improve CHW financing, and broadly disseminate recent advances in technology, diagnostics and treatment to support community-based health workers. The ILO gender audit has added impetus to the process of integrating gender equality into the ILO by setting in motion an institutional learning mechanism. The challenge now is to rigorously monitor the implementation of its recommendations. The ILO constituents and the UN system are increasingly interested in conducting gender audits in order to accelerate gender mainstreaming within their own organizations. ILO is responding by modifying and revising the audit methodology to meet their specifi c needs.

Savings banks in Spain have a long tradition of providing social credits to under-served financially excluded communities. Caja de Granada in particular chairs the International Association of Social Pledging Credit Establishments1 and like Caixa Galicia and Caixa Catalunya, grants micro-credits through their foundations, mainly in the regions where they operate.
