The Western discourse

The research "Practising Design in Response to Indigenous Sovereignty: A Narrative of Designing Lawfully on Country" explores the ways in which the designer and design practice is challenged by Indigenous sovereignty. Focusing on the entanglement of Design within socio-political contexts in Australia, what follows is a narrative of deep interrogation of both Western Eurocentric Design and the design practitioner’s racialised logic.

In this context, despite being a philosophical or theoretical cannon, NonWestern is one of the perspectives of comparative literature in which the social, political, economic or cultural issues are evaluated from various positionalities. With this perspective, the literature produced by the writers representing the NonWestern societies or countries are incorporated in Non-Western literature with as much respect as those representing the so-called superior cultures produced by the writers belonging the respective cultures.

During and after the debate between Art for art’ sakists and Art for life’ sakists from 1935 to 1939, the critic Thieu Son and other critics and writers who are influenced by European Romanticism were addressed as “aestheticist” and “bourgeoisie” for their praise of romantic literature. Recently, there have been several studies which aim to clear these unfair receptions and return the proper positions to them in Vietnamese literature and criticism.

In this paper, Mary Kingsley’s Travels in West Africa has been analysed from the perspective of critical discourse analysis. In particular, how Kingsley constructs whiteness through strategies such as nomination, predication, argumentation and intensification or mitigation has been explored. The natives from minor culture are represented from the western terministic screens, to use K. Burke’s phrase. The findings show that the strategies used are related to the positive construction of self (West) and the negative presentation of Other (Africa).

While one doubts that works of art are ever deeply prized for their aesthetic qualities alone, it is probably true that in Western societies, and in others with highly developed art traditions, aesthetic notions are most perfectly manifested in works of art, and are given their most refined expression in that type of discourse known as the philosophy of art. But the aesthetic notions so manifested and refined are those of members of the art world, not necessarily those of the general population.

In this small piece of work, I am doing a critical discourse analysis on a global text: The North Atlantic Treaty. The document is global because it is a direct product of the globalization process world-wide where the giant, powerful and influential capitalist western countries with their joined efforts, at first, have been trying to protect their benefits and then, more importantly, imposing their foreign - affair policies on other countries at their own will.
