Theories of motivation

This thesis addresses important issues about how to make game characters and virtual agents more realistic or believable by using cognitive-social personality theories. We begin motivation by discussing two examples. The first is from a television series and the second is a more concrete example that will be used throughout the thesis to explain concepts and the model. These examples represent the ideal goal of our work.

This thesis is divided into six chapters. The current chapter has introduced the thesis. Chapter 2 discusses the background of the institutional features of the Indian IPO market, including the grey market. Chapter 3 (Study 1) introduces an integrated conceptual framework of information sharing, with and without allocation discretion to underwriters. Chapter 4 (Study 2) applies signaling theory in the Indian IPO market setting to understand the effect of the information asymmetry between IPO investors.

The study "Determinants of executive remuneration: Australian evidence" is primarily motivated by the recent importance attached to corporate governance and regulation of executive compensation by government bodies, other regulatory agencies, media commentators and other stakeholders. No other Australian research has, to date, been carried out in a setting where companies are subject to the full extent of recent regulatory changes.

This paper introduces the notion of a stability condition on a triangulated category. The motivation comes from the study of Dirichlet branes in string theory, and especially from M.R. Douglas’s work on Π-stability. From a mathematical point of view, the most interesting feature of the definition is that the set of stability conditions Stab(D) on a fixed category D has a natural topology, thus defining a new invariant of triangulated categories.
