Obesity has become a worldwide pandemic that has tripled in the past 40 years, affecting children and adults and resulting in various obesity-related comorbidities.1 In a CDC report from 2016, the prevalence of adult obesity was near 40% with an estimated annual medical cost in the United States of $147 billion.2 Although bariatric surgery has yielded promising results in combatting obesity, acute and chronic complications such as surgical leaks and weight regain are not uncommonly encountered.

Acinetobacter baumannii has emerged as a worldwide problem as a nosocomial pathogen in hospitalized patients. Acinetobacter spp. can cause a multitude of infections including pneumonia, bacteremia, meningitis, urinary tract infections, and skin and soft tissue infections, and the mortality associated with these infections is high. Isolates resistant to almost all commercially available antimicrobials have been identified, thus limiting treatment options.

Twenty years after the discovery of neural stem cells, the question whether the central nervous system can be considered among regenerative tissues is still open. On one side, deep characterization of neural stem and progenitor cells, their niches, and their progeny in brain neurogenic sites overtly showed that new neurons can be generated in the brain of adult mammals, including humans.

Atrial fibrillation is a rapidly evolving epidemic associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, and its prevalence has increased during the past few decades. In the past few years, the recent understanding of the diverse mechanisms of this arrhythmia has led to the improvement of our therapeutic strategies. However, many clinicians have still felt the frustration in management of this commonly encountered arrhythmia.

As the NCPCR policy document states, “[...] civil unrest exposes children to multiple deprivations. Children are killed, hurt and maimed as a direct result of violence. Access to food, water, sanitation, health care and schooling deteriorates during unrest. Political insecurity pushes children into situations that can circumscribe the remainder of their lives. It disrupts families and social networks that support children’s physical, emotional and social development. The NCPCR has encountered children who are displaced and forced to drop out of school as a result.

The perfect cardiac catheterization technique, including good diagnostic and therapeutic qualities, without risk and with no recovery time for the patient, does not exist. Obtaining initial access to the arterial circulation is the first and most frequent catheterization difficulty encountered by the interventional cardiologist during the procedure. Often, it is also the only difficult part of the exam for the patient because it may cause a vagal reaction or painful spasm.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) used to be regarded as a rare disease. The increasing numbers of chronic hepatitis C virus carriers in the United States and subsequent increased incidence of HCC seen in most large medical centers means that it is no longer an uncommon disease for most gastroenterologists or oncologists to encounter. During the times when liver resection or systemic chemotherapy were the only real therapeutic modalities available, the outcomes were generally dismal, especially because most patients presented with advanced-stage tumors.

The past thirty years have witnessed the birth, growth, and evolution of clinical electrophysiology from a field whose initial goals were the understanding of arrhythmia mechanisms to one of significant therapeutic impact. The development and refinement of implantable devices and catheter ablation have made non-pharmacologic therapy a treatment of choice for most arrhythmias encountered in clinical practice.
