This textbook represents an attempt to present a relatively brief overview of Materials Science, the anticipated readership being students of structural and mechanical engineering. It is in two sections – the first characterising engineering materials, the second considering structure–property relationships. Emphasis is thus placed on the relationship between structure and properties of materials, starting with the concept of ‘structure’ at three levels - crystal structure, microstructure, and molecular structure.

In ebook "In-situ small-angle X-ray scattering investigation of transient nanostructure of multi-phase polymer materials under mechanical deformation" the evolution of the materials structure is visualized and quantitatively analyzed from exhaustive sequences of scattering images. Three different classes of polymer composites are presented as typical and illustrative examples. The obtained results illustrate that the interactions of their components can cause unpredictable structural effects, ultimately leading to a weakening of the material, where a reinforcement was expected.

This work describes an aid to three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction based on serial section technology for better characterizing non-transparent material microstructure and orientation. We found that two separate primary Al2Cu phase dendrites of directionally solidified Ale40%Cu alloy appeared in the twodimensional (2D) microstructure but were shown to be only one dendrite in the three-dimensional (3D) microstructure by using the assistive characterization method.

3D lion's mane like AlV3O9 microspheres deposited on the well-exfoliated graphene were successfully synthesised through a facile solvothermal method where the graphene sheet was prepared solely via the liquid phase exfoliation process. The highly electrical conductive graphene was introduced as a conductive substrate or a backbone to support the diffusion of the electrolyte ions (OH-).

In this report, thin layers of MoS2 were in-situ incorporated into graphene oxide (GO) to form MoS2/graphene nanocomposite by a facile ultrasonic-assisted hydrothermal method. Xray Diffraction (XRD) and Raman analysis revealed that the as-synthesized MoS2 nanosheets crystalized in hexagonal phase 2H-MoS2 while High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) images confirmed that MoS2 layers with average thickness of ~5–6 nm (6–8 layers) attached on the edges and surfaces of graphene sheets with high density and uniform shape restacking in three-dimensional (3D) architectures.

A combination of gel-casting and polymeric foam infiltration methods is used in this study to prepare porous bodies of hydroxyapatite (HA), to provide a better control over the microstructures of samples. These scaffolds were prepared by impregnating a body of porous polyurethane foam with slurry containing HA powder, and using a percentage of solids between 40% and 50% w/v, and three different types of monomers to provide a better performance.

The paper deals with observing the behaviour of concrete composites with addition of fibres under ambient and elevated temperature with the aim to determine the mechanical properties of materials. The experimental tests were conducted on three selected concrete composites which differ in a type and content of fibrous reinforcement used. The experimental work carried out was divided into several phases. First of all it was necessary to leave the produced specimens aging and drying in order to minimize the risk of unexpected damage caused by concrete spalling during heating.

This paper investigates a Supply Chain System for deteriorating items in which a supplier supplies a manufacturer with raw material, and the manufacturer produces the finished goods. Demand rate is assumed to be time-sensitive in nature (Trapezoidal type), which allows three-phase variation in demand, and production rate is demand dependent. Our adoption of trapezoidal type demand reflects a real market demand for newly launched product.
