Hofmann’s syndrome is a rare form of hypothyroid myopathy in adults, which is mainly characterized by muscular weakness and muscular pseudohypertrophy. We report about a 61-year-old Western European man with myalgia, myxedema and pseudohypertrophy of the calf muscles. Laboratory tests revealed significantly elevated thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and creatine kinase (CK).

Thyroid hormone replacement therapy has been used for more than a century to treat hypothyroidism. As levothyroxine is usually administered over a patient’s lifetime, physiological changes throughout life will affect the dose of levothyroxine required to maintain euthyroidism.

Identification of the genomic signatures of recent selection may help uncover causal polymorphisms controlling traits relevant to recent decades of selective breeding in livestock. In this study, we aimed at detecting signatures of recent selection in commercial broiler chickens using genotype information from single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs).

To assess of serum NT-proBNP levels in patients with Basedow’s disease and its relationship with body mass index, age, and gender. Subjects and methods: Serum NT-proBNP levels were measured by electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA) with a sandwich immunoassay in 258 patients with Basedow’s disease was compared with 84 age-matched subjects in the control group [37.0 (27.0 - 52.0) vs. 39.0 (30.0 - 50.5) years, p = 0.67].

We carefully studied the article titled “A practical laboratory index to predict institutionalization and mortality – an 18-year population-based follow-up study” written by Heikkilä et al. and published in BMC Geriatrics on 25 February 2021 with great interest. We would like to make some comments regarding this article and tool.

Congenital goiter is a common thyroid metabolic disorder characterized by low levels of thyroid hormone, subsequent secretion of excess thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) from the pituitary gland, and compensatory hyperplasia of the glands. The presence of signet ring cells (SRCs) does not provide sufficient evidence for the diagnosis of a thyroid tumor, making histopathological diagnosis challenging.

Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) analysis was used to evaluate the univariate contaminant exposure effect as well as the contaminant mixture effects on levels of thyroid hormones. Significant and positive associations were found between total T3 and PC-2 (high positive nickel and cadmium loadings), total T3 and PC-3 (negative association with negative loading for nickel and positive loading for cadmium) and TSH and PC-1 (high positive loadings for organic contaminants).

We investigated the effect of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) protein 29 (ERp29) on thyroglobulin (Tg) secretion and its negative regulation by microRNAs (miRNAs). ERp29 overexpression promoted Tg secretion from thyrocytes of PCCL3 cells via activation of ER stress sensors, including activation of transcription factor 6 fragmentation, XBP1 mRNA splicing by inositol-requiring enzyme 1, and phosphorylation of eukaryotic initiation factor 2 alpha as downstream actions of RNA-dependent protein kinase-like ER kinase.

In this study, a nonlabeled immunosensor based on covalent immobilization of anti-TSH antibody by using the formation of self-assembled monolayers (SAM) of 4-mercaptophenylacetic acid (4-MPA) and functionalization of carboxyl ends with 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimetilaminopropil) carbodiimide (EDC)/N-Hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) was fabricated for detection of TSH. Immobilization steps including the concentration of 4-MPA, the concentration of anti-TSH antibody, and duration of anti-TSH antibody incubation were optimized by utilizing electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.

Epidemiological evidence suggests that synchronous or metachronous presentation of breast and thyroid cancers exceeds that predicted by chance alone. The following potential explanations have been hypothesized: common environmental or hormonal factors, oncogenic effect of the treatment for the first cancer, closer follow-up of cancer survivors, shared underlying genetic risk factors.

Anuran metamorphosis, which is obligatorily initiated and sustained by thyroid hormone (TH), is a dramatic example of extensive morphological, biochemical and cellular changes occurring during post-embryonic development. Thus, it provides an ideal model to understand the actions of the hormone and molecular mechanisms underlying these developmental and apoptotic processes. In addition to transcriptional factors, microRNAs (miRNAs) play key roles in diverse biological processes via post-transcriptional repression of mRNAs.
