Effect of tillage practices and supplemental irrigation options on growth, yield and soil biological properties of hybrid maize

Field experiment was conducted in two consecutive growing seasons at Agricultural Engineering College and Research Institute, Kumulur, Tamil Nadu to evaluate the tillage practices, crop residue and supplemental irrigation through drip irrigation in maize under rainfed condition. The experiment was laid out in strip plot design with three replications.

Conservation agriculture and soil quality – An overview

Conservation agriculture (CA) has potential to changes soil physical, chemical and biological soil quality parameters compared to conventional tillage (CT) systems. The improved bio-physico-chemical soil quality in turn, affect the ecosystem services and sustainability of crop production system through counterbalancing the climate variability with the help of increasing sink for carbon sequestration within the soil. CA can also affect the functional diversity of soil microbes that essential for improved soil quality, crop production and many ecosystem services.

Effect of zero tillage practices and nutritional levels on microbes, enzymatic activities in soil and productivity of pigeonpea under rainfed situations

A field experiment was conducted at KVK, Kalburgi, on black soils. The zero tillage practices were followed since 3 years in five main plots and different reduced nutrient levels were imposed as subplots, by following split plot design. Every year same crop pigeonpea genotype TS-3R was grown. The prophylactic measures were undertaken against pests and diseases. Biological observations were analysed at 50 per cent flowering.

In modifying soil pH, the addition of amendments, fertilizers, tillage practices, soil organic matter levels, and drainage should all be considered. A common amendment used to acidify alkaline soils is sulfur (S) (Slaton et al., 2001). Elemental sulfur (S0 ) is oxidized by microbes to produce sulfate (SO4 2- ) and H+, causing a lower pH. Ferrous sulfate (FeSO4 ) and aluminum sulfate (Al 2 (SO4 )3 ) can also be used to lower pH, not due to SO4 , but because of the addition of acidic cations (Fe2+, Al 3+) (see Q & A #1).
