Tillering maize

Methyl-CpG-binding domain (MBD) proteins play important roles in epigenetic gene regulation, and have diverse molecular, cellular, and biological functions in plants. MBD proteins have been functionally characterized in various plant species, including Arabidopsis, wheat, maize, and tomato. In rice, 17 sequences were bioinformatically predicted as putative MBD proteins.

Rice - maize cropping system is prominent adapted by the farmers in many parts of the country. Field experiment was conducted for the “effect of nutrient and residue management practices under rice - maize cropping system” with ten treatments during Kharif 2016 and 2017 at Research-Cum-Instructional Farm of Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Raipur, Chhattisgarh, India.

Maize genotype with effective tillers was developed from a natural mutant with ineffective tillers at Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture, Hyderabad, India. Teosinte (Zea mays ssp. luxurians), African tall (fodder maize) and Harsha (composite) were included for development of CRIDA tillering maize viz., CRTM-2. Single plant of CRTM2 had five effective tillers similar to Teosinte, with a total height of 1223.5 cm, 62.0 leaves and 25.8 filled cobs. CRTM-2 showed an increase of 530.3, 423.7 and 2086.0% over Harsha, 388.0, 315.8 and 2350 % over African tall and 15.5, 34.

An experiment was conducted during 2009-10 and 2010-11 at research farm of division of Agronomy, IARI, New Delhi, to study the effect of various doses and methods of zinc application on maize and wheat. The treatment consisted of control, 12.5 kg ZnSO4 ha-1 , 25 kg ZnSO4 ha-1 and foliar spray of 0.5 % ZnSO4 and two wheat Varieties ‘DBW 17’ and ‘PBW 343’. The grain, stover and biological yield of maize were significantly influenced by application of zinc during first year and the maximum yields were recorded with the application of 25 kg ZnSO4 ha-1 during both the year.
