Tolerable soil loss
-
In addition to the widely recognized advantages of disease tolerance and high crop yields through vigorous attainment of nutrients, grafting technology is also highly effective in ameliorating crop losses caused by adverse environmental conditions such as low soil temperature and high soil salts, especially under protected cultivations where successive cropping or continuous farming is routinely practiced. Grafted seedlings are much favored in hydroponics farming systems where the chances of rapid spread of noxious diseases, once infected, is high.

Sunburn injury is common on fruits in due to high solar radiation levels and air temperatures, low relative humidity, and high elevations. The incidence and severity of sunburn depends upon climatic factor, cultivars, hormonal, nutritional and soil moisture. Fruit production losses due to sunburn may be 6 to30 per cent depending on seasons and the type of fruit.

Abiotic stresses are major constrains which adversely affect the plant growth and productivity. Among all abiotic stresses, drought is considered as one of the major constraints on agricultural productivity worldwide and is likely to further increase. Hence the need of the hour is to formulate the strategies that can minimize the loss in crop production under drought conditions. One of them being the exploitation of soil microbes which have the capacity to overcome the adverse effects of drought stress.

Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterrenea Verdc. L) is an African pulse crop, cultivated mainly as protein source. The crop is most suitable for arid and semi-arid tropics and tolerant to saline soils. Low Productivity of pulses in the country is attributed to many biotic stresses which are ranging from plant ideotype to biotic and abiotic stresses. Among the various diseases, yellow mosaic virus (YMV) disease in pulses and also causes yield losses in Bambara groundnut.

Soil erosion is the common land degradation problem in the worldwide, and also is one of the most critical environmental hazards of recent times, which reduces productivity. Assessment of soil erosion is expensive and intensively long exercise. In the present study an USLE model has been used for estimation of soil loss for Raigad district of Konkan region of Maharashtra.

Environmental factors that plants face during their life cycle are dynamic in nature. Plants require adequate amount of water for their growth and development. At the event of moisture deficit in the soil, the water potential in the cells drastically reduced. Under salt stress, plants succumb to salt injuries in addition to dehydration. Plants try to combat such situation by adopting a variety of mechanisms, including closure of stomata that limits water loss and exclusion of Na+ to reduce salt injury.

The Wonder Cereal, Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is the heart of our culture and the staple food crop consumed by more than 50 per cent of the world’s population. Aerobic rice proves to be a viable technology by reducing water losses through seepage, percolation and evaporation. However, under aerobic condition several essential nutrients, especially zinc became unavailable due to positive soil redox potential. Therefore genetic improvement of rice genotypes for zinc deficiency under aerobic condition is essential to exploit the water saving potential of aerobic condition.

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi benefits plants by improving the uptake of phosphate and other nutrients from soil and also increases the disease tolerance to the host plant. The fungal pathogens cause huge loss to vegetable crops when infected. In order to overcome this problem, the influence of AMF in the control of fungal plant pathogens is studied. AMF, Glomus sp. was isolated from the rhizosphere soil of tomato plants. The wilt pathogen, Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici was cultured from the infected roots of tomato plants.

Lentil (Lens culinaris Medikus) is an important winter season grain legume crop, mostly grown on residual soil moisture and is frequently subjected to terminal drought and heat stress, that results in low and variable seed yields. Moreover, delay in sowing even for two weeks causes the reproductive and grain filling phase of this crop to coincide with a period of substantially high temperature resulting in yield losses by reduced seed set, seed weight and accelerated senescence.

Soil B analyses before the cultivation of cereals are, therefore, required to prevent yield losses. In addition, cultivars showing tolerance to B deficiency can be used in breeding programs aiming at the development of B-efficient cultivars.

Forests play an important role in reducing erosion. In Vietnam, destroying natural forests in mountainous areas has caused serious environmental problems for sustainable development. Required forest areas for protection of soils from erosion in Vietnam are defined in this study. An algorithm of defining required forest area for soil erosion prevention is based on a comparison of soil loss prediction and its threshold of 10 ton ha-1yr-1 (soil loss tolerance) within the GIS environment. Soil loss is predicted from rainfall erosivity index, slope, porosity and...
