Tolerant genotypes of rice
-
Soil salinity is one of the primary causes of yield decline in rice. Pokkali (Pok) is a highly salt-tolerant landrace, whereas IR29 is a salt-sensitive but widely cultivated genotype. Comparative analysis of these genotypes may offer a better understanding of the salinity tolerance mechanisms in rice.

Drought-tolerance ensures a crop to maintain life activities and protect cell from damages under dehydration. It refers to diverse mechanisms temporally activated when the crop adapts to drought. However, knowledge about the temporal dynamics of rice transcriptome under drought is limited.

Salinity, as one of the main abiotic stresses, critically threatens growth and fertility of main food crops including rice in the world. To get insight into the molecular mechanisms by which tolerant genotypes responds to the salinity stress, we propose an integrative meta-analysis approach to find the key genes involved in salinity tolerance.

A field screening of thirty four drought tolerant rice genotypes was conducted during Kharif 2017 and Kharif 2018 with the objective to identify different genotypes under drought stress condition. Significant variation was observed among genotypes for all studied traits including leaf rolling, leaf drying and relative water content.

Aluminium (Al) toxicity is the major limiting factor of crop production in acidic soils. Most of the soils in North eastern region are acidic. In order to improve the crop production in acidic soil conditions, screening genotypes which are tolerant to aluminium induced stress would be immense importance.

The present study was carried out in sixteen genotypes having different aptitude for tolerance to stress. Drought stress was imposed at early reproductive phase of growth. Despites of reduction in plant height and number of tillers, genotypes have shown least reduction in the grain yield under drought stress.

Drought is one of the major abiotic stress that limits rice production in Assam, India. A traditional drought tolerant local cultivar ‘Banglami’ was crossed with a high yielding rice variety ‘Ranjit’ and 180 F2 plants were raised. The 110 polymorphic SSR markers were used for genotyping of F2 plants.

To encourage rice-rice cropping system, enhance yield and livelihood in rainfed areas, Drought Breeding Network, Cuttack conducted “Participatory Varietal Selection (PVS)” trial at Samian and Berna village under drought prone rainfed condition during wet season. The management practices were consistent with local crop husbandry used by farmers and evaluations were made by the farmers.

Drought is a major constraint in rice- growing areas of Asia. Identification of genomic regions containing QTLs governing drought tolerance traits is inevitable for developing novel genotypes with enhanced drought tolerance. A RIL population of 122 lines derived from a cross of Daggaddeshi/Danteswari was used for identification of QTL governing traits associated with yield was used in the study. A new QTL (qDTY12.2) linked to grain yield was identified in both stress and non-stress conditions.

A potted experiment was carried out in the net house of the Plant Breeding Unit, TRRI, Aduthurai in 2020 to screen and evaluate the performance of diverse rice genotypes for anaerobic germination ability with a view to select the suitable genotypes for multiple stress tolerance (drought and anaerobic germination) that will fit into the existing niche in the DSR. The aim of this experiment is to identify short duration genotypes with early vigour and potential to germinate under anaerobic condition.

For the establishment of the distinctness among 31 accessions of Oryza glaberrima, eight morphological traits following Distinctness, Uniformity and Stability test (DUS) studied. Out of 31 accessions studied, two accessions viz., EC861804, EC861805 were found to be highly distinct as they possessed distinct traits namely purple split ligule, medium green leaves, erect flag leaf, presence of awn along with lodging tolerance indicating their usefulness as donors for crop improvement programmes. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences for all the characters studied.

The development of biotypes and existence of variability in Brown planthopper population always demands for the identification of new sources of resistance from time to time. However, the presence of desirable quality and yield traits in the genotypes along with source of resistance to BPH will be an added advantage. Screening was carried out with 39such promising rice genotypes and three checks following standard seed box technique. The test revealed 17 genotypes to be moderately resistant with damage score ranging between 3.6 -5.0.

Zinc deficiency which leads to “Khaira” disease is the major micronutrient problem in rice. It can be corrected by applying zinc supplements to the soil or plant which will put burden on resource poor farmers. Present investigation was taken to map QTLs for zinc deficiency tolerance to zinc deficiency in rice which may helpful to develop zinc deficiency tolerant cultivars.

Coastal Odisha is one of the most flood prone areas of India where the paddy crop in the wet season is often devastated by flash floods with an average productivity of only 0.5–0.8 t ha⁻ ¹. The present study showed that farmers preferred to cultivate low yielding traditional land races owing to their better flood tolerance and the unavailability of flood tolerant high yielding varieties (HYVs).

Phenotypic screening during kharif 2015 and evaluation of Sub1 introgressed lines in Ranjit and Bahadur for submergence tolerance was done with the 35 genotypes. Out of 35 genotypes 32 were Sub1 introgressed BC2F3 lines (24 BC2F3 lines of the cross -Ranjit x Swarna-Sub1and 8 BC2F3 lines of the cross -Bahadur x Swarna-Sub1) with three parents i.e. Ranjit, Bahadur, and Swarna-Sub1. The phenotypic screening of genotypes showed that all Sub1 introgressed lines had significantly higher survival rates as compared with the original recipient parents whereas less change in plant height was observed.

Intermittent drought stress in rainfed ecosystem significantly limits the production of Ranjit, the most predominant high yielding rice variety of North East India. In order to understand the genetic basis of drought tolerance a mapping population comprising 85 F4 individuals between ‘Ranjit’ and a drought tolerant cultivar, ARC10372 was developed and genotyped with 80 microsatellite markers. 7 possible linkage groups were analysed by changing the LOD values and the recombination frequencies in the Join map 4.0 software package.
