Trace fossils

The paper adapted Palley’s (2017) notion of policy lock-in and lock-out via hysteresis to propose an entrenchment spiral as a potential mechanism leading to the current degree of coal and fossil fuel extraction entrenchment in Colombia. The paper concludes that the phase-in of LSCE and FE was facilitated by the combination of masking and securitization strategies used by an incumbency regime closely associated with state capture.

Herein, 20 ichnospecies belonging to 8 ichnogenera were identified in bivalves, gastropods, and corals (n = 701) from the Late Pleistocene coral reef along the Red Sea coast, northwest Saudi Arabia. The trace fossils were produced by clionid sponges (47.39%), endolithic bivalves (42.17%), polychaete annelids (5.42%), vermetid gastropods (3.81%), and acrothoracican barnacles (1.21%). The habitat conditions changed gradually, from well-oxygenated, shallow, high-energy back-reef and reef crest bioeroding polychaetes and bivalves, to deep, low-energy reef slope dominated by boring sponges.

The Güneyce Formation is well exposed in the Lake District of southwestern Turkey. It was deposited in the early Miocene in the Neotethys ocean and contains a large variety of trace fossils. Laetoli in northern Tanzania is one of the most important paleontological and paleoanthropological sites in Africa. It is renowned for the recovery of early hominin fossils belonging to A. afarensis and for the discovery of remarkably well-preserved trails of footprints of hominins. Given the significance of Laetoli for understanding and interpreting the evolutionary history of early hominins the author initiated long-term geological and paleontological investigations at Laetoli and at other fossil localities on the Eyasi Plateau.

Mercury released by coal-fired power plants may not be as easy to address. As the largest point source of atmospheric mercury emissions to the North American environment, coal plants have been the target of much debate. Energy companies have several options to reduce mercury emissions. They can invest in expensive control technologies for coal plants. Alternatively, they can generate electricity from energy sources other than coal, although some other fossil fuels, such as natural gas and oil, may also contain trace levels of mercury. Or they can invest in helping people to use less energy.
