  • The liberalisation of the services sector has been a controversial and much debated issue in the WTO. As we know, the developed countries are the main suppliers of services, although the developing countries are starting to shift towards a service-sector economy. According to data from Stiglitz and Charlton (2005), trade liberalisation of services would generate profits of US$375 billion per year, in other words 75% of a full liberalisation of goods and services. In addition, 75% of the profits from service trade liberalisation would go to the developed countries.

  • This paper analyzes the impacts of ASEAN+3 FTAs on Vietnam iron and steel trade flows. In this respect, a gravity model is applied to the panel data covering 27 top trading partners of Vietnam from 2001 to 2012. The paper findings show positive impact of ACFTA and VJEPA on increasing imports of ironandsteel into Vietnam while AKFTA, AFTA and VJEPA have positive effects on their export. AJCEP and AFTA are concluded to have little impact on either imports or exports.

  • Determinants of intra-industry trade for Vietnam’s manufacturing industry. This study focuses on identifying the country-specific determinants of intra-industry trade in the manufacturing sector between Vietnam and major trading partners using random effects estimation. The results indicate that the extent of Vietnam’s intra-industry trade is positively correlated with average country size and average income levels, while it is negatively correlated with income inequality, distance, and trade imbalance.

  • This paper attempts to analyze the determinants of trade flows among APEC member economies. Using the panel data analysis, the empirical results show a number of robust findings. First, GDP is one of the most important determinants of trade flows among APEC economies. Second, membership in an FTA would likely lead to an increase in trade among the member countries.
