Compared to regressions obtained using the traditional logarithmic transformation method, the above regressions had a much better fit. The original biomass data of the sample trees were also used to calculate the proportion of total biomass apportioned to trunk, branches, leaves and roots.

Helicteres hirsuta Lour., particularly its stems and leaves have been used in Vietnamese traditional medicine to cure furuncles, dysentery, measles and flu. In this study, we examined biological activities of 5 fractions from methanol extract of H. hirsuta roots. The results showed that ethyl acetate fraction has the highest content of phenolic and flavonoid compounds (220.9 ± 15.67 mg GAE, gallic acid equivalents/g dry weight and 23.03 ± 0.97 mg QE, quercetin equivalents/g dry weight, respectively).

The rhizome of Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels (Umbelliferae) is one of the most commonly used traditional drugs in China, indicated against anemia, menstrual disorders, amenorroehea and rheumatism. From the ethyl acetate extract of the roots of A. sinensis a stilbene, ferulic acid, coniferylferulate and decorticate have been isolated. Their structures were identified by MS and NMR spectroscopic methods.

The rhizome of Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels (Umbelliferae) is known as "Danggui" in China, has been used widely in traditional Chinese medicine to treat irregular menstruation, anaemia, headache, hypertension, chronic asthma and rheumatism. From the ethyl acetate extract of its roots four phthalides have been isolated. Their structures were identified by MS and NMR spectroscopic methods to be (Z)-3-butylidenphthalide, senkyunolide H, senkyunolide I and dihydroxyligustilide.

An immuno-homologue of maize Ca2+/calmodulin (CaM)dependent protein kinase with a molecular mass of 72 kDa was identified in pea. The pea kinase (PsCCaMK) was upregulated in roots in response to low temperature and increased salinity. Exogenous Ca2+ application increased the kinase level and the response was faster than that obtained following stress application. Low temperaturemediated, but not salinity-mediated stress kinase increase was inhibited by the application of EGTA and W7, a CaM inhibitor....

The vanilloid-like TRP-channel VRL-1 (TRPV2) is a non-selective cation channel expressed by primary sensory neurons and non-neuronal tissues [Caterina, M.J., Rosen, T.A., Tominaga, M., Brake, A.J and Julius, D. (1999) Nature398, 436–441]. It is one of the six members of the vanilloid-like TRP-channel family which is now termed the TRPV family [Montell, G., Birnbaumer, L., Flockerzi, V., Bindels, R.J., Brutford, E.A., Caterina, M.J., Clapham, D.E., Harteneck, C., Heller, S., Julius, D., Kojima, I., Mori, Y., Penner, R., Prawitt, D., Scharenberg, A.M., Schultz, G., Shimizu, N. and Zhu, M.X.

When the rhizosphere is nitrogen-starved, legumes and rhizobia (soil bacteria)enter intoa symbiosis that enables the fixation of atmospheric dinitrogen. This implies a complex chemical dialogue between partners and drastic changes on both plant roots and bacteria. Several recent works pointed out the importance of rhizobial surface polysaccharides in the establishing of the highly specific symbiosis between symbionts. Exopolysaccharides appear tobe essential for the early infection process.

Tip growth is a specialized type of polar growth where new cell wall is deposited in a localized region of the cell, the growing tip. These cells show a characteristic zonation, with a high accumulationof secretory vesicles containing cell wall components at the tip, followed by an organelle-enriched zone.MsPG3is a Medicago sativapolygalacturonase gene isolated in our laboratory, specifically expressed during the interaction of this plant with its symbiotic partner Sinorhiz-obium melilotiand which might participate in tip growth processes during symbiosis....

Root cultures ofSwertia chirata(Gentianaceae) were grown with supplements of [1-13 C]glucose, [U-13 C6]glucose or [carboxy-13 C]shikimic acid. 1,3,5,8-Tetrahydroxyxanthone was isolated and analysed by quantitative NMR analysis. The observed isotopomer distribution shows that 1,3,5,8-tetrahydroxyxanthone is biosynthesized via a polyketide-type pathway. The starter unit, 3-hydroxybenzoyl-CoA, is obtained from an early shikimate pathway intermediate. Phenylalanine, cinnamic acid and benzoic acid were ruled out as intermediates....

A small anaerobically induced tomato transcription factor was isolated from a subtractive library. This factor, desig-nated ABZ1 (anaerobic basic leucine zipper), is anaerobi-cally induced in fruits, leaves and roots and encodes a nuclear localized protein. ABZ1 shares close structural and sequence homology with the S-family of small basic leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factors that are implicated in stress response.Nuclear localizationofABZ1 ismediatedby the basic region and occurs under normoxic conditions. ABZ1 binds to G-box-like target sites as a dimer. ...

Circular dichroism (CD) spectra of two major hemoglobin components (Hb), HbI and HbIV, from Oncorhyncus mykiss(formerly Salmo irideus) trout were evaluated in the range 250–600 nm. HbI is characterized by a complete insensitivity to pH changes, while HbIV presents the Root effect. Both reduced [iron(II) or oxy] and oxidized (met) forms of the two proteins were studied at different pHs, 7.8 and 6.0, to obtain information about the pH effects on the structural features of these hemoglobins.

Volkensin, a type 2 ribosome-inactivating protein from the roots of Adenia volkensiiHarms (kilyambiti plant) was characterized both at the protein and nucleotide level by direct amino acid sequencing and cloning of the gene enco-ding the protein. Gene sequence analysis revealed that vol-kensin is encoded by a 1569-bp ORF (523 amino acid residues) without introns, withan internal linker sequence of 45 bp.

Plumbago indicaL. contains naphthoquinones that are derived from six acetate units. To characterize the enzyme catalyzing the first step in the biosynthesis of these metabolites, a cDNA encoding a type III polyketide synthase (PKS) was isolated from roots of P. indica. The translated poly-peptide shared 47–60% identical residues with PKSs from other plant spe-cies.

Traditional Distance Vector Routing Protocols. • Use the Bellman-Ford or Ford-Fulkerson algorithm. • Age out routing entries and uses periodic updates. • Keep track of only the best routes; the best path to a destination network. • When a route becomes unavailable, the router must wait for a new routing update. • Slower convergence due to holddown timers.

"Wing Chun" is a subtle and complete system of Chinese Kung Fu. Developed over hundreds of years, its roots lie in the Shaolin Temple tradition. Legend has it that in 1645 a Buddhist nun by the name of Ng Moi devised the system and taught it to a young girl called Yim Wing Chun, who successfully used her newly learned skills to defend herself against a local bully who attempted to force himself upon her. Originally a very secret system, the sophisticated art of Wing Chun was only passed on to family members and close, trusted friends.
