An immuno-homologue of maize Ca2+/calmodulin (CaM)dependent protein kinase with a molecular mass of 72 kDa was identified in pea. The pea kinase (PsCCaMK) was upregulated in roots in response to low temperature and increased salinity. Exogenous Ca2+ application increased the kinase level and the response was faster than that obtained following stress application. Low temperaturemediated, but not salinity-mediated stress kinase increase was inhibited by the application of EGTA and W7, a CaM inhibitor....

When the rhizosphere is nitrogen-starved, legumes and rhizobia (soil bacteria)enter intoa symbiosis that enables the fixation of atmospheric dinitrogen. This implies a complex chemical dialogue between partners and drastic changes on both plant roots and bacteria. Several recent works pointed out the importance of rhizobial surface polysaccharides in the establishing of the highly specific symbiosis between symbionts. Root cultures ofSwertia chirata(Gentianaceae) were grown with supplements of [1-13 C]glucose, [U-13 C6]glucose or [carboxy-13 C]shikimic acid. 1,3,5,8-Tetrahydroxyxanthone was isolated and analysed by quantitative NMR analysis. The observed isotopomer distribution shows that 1,3,5,8-tetrahydroxyxanthone is biosynthesized via a polyketide-type pathway. The starter unit, 3-hydroxybenzoyl-CoA, is obtained from an early shikimate pathway intermediate. Phenylalanine, cinnamic acid and benzoic acid were ruled out as intermediates....

A small anaerobically induced tomato transcription factor was isolated from a subtractive library. Circular dichroism (CD) spectra of two major hemoglobin components (Hb), HbI and HbIV, from Oncorhyncus mykiss(formerly Salmo irideus) trout were evaluated in the range 250–600 nm. HbI is characterized by a complete insensitivity to pH changes, while HbIV presents the Root effect. Both reduced [iron(II) or oxy] and oxidized (met) forms of the two proteins were studied at different pHs, 7.8 and 6.0, to obtain information about the pH effects on the structural features of these hemoglobins.

Volkensin, a type 2 ribosome-inactivating protein from the roots of Adenia volkensiiHarms (kilyambiti plant) was characterized both at the protein and nucleotide level by direct amino acid sequencing and cloning of the gene enco-ding the protein. Gene sequence analysis revealed that vol-kensin is encoded by a 1569-bp ORF (523 amino acid residues) without introns, withan internal linker sequence of 45 bp.

Plumbago indicaL. contains naphthoquinones that are derived from six acetate units. To characterize the enzyme catalyzing the first step in the biosynthesis of these metabolites, a cDNA encoding a type III polyketide synthase (PKS) was isolated from roots of P. indica. The translated poly-peptide shared 47–60% identical residues with PKSs from other plant spe-cies.
