The Hypotension Prediction Index (HPI) displays an innovative monitoring tool which predicts intraoperative hypotension before its onset. In sum, this HPI-based treatment algorithm represents a useful application for the treatment of complex anesthesia and perioperative patient blood management. It is a simple but powerful extension of standard monitoring for the prevention of intraoperative hypotension.

Adult cardiac surgery is often complicated by elevated blood losses that account for elevated transfusion requirements. Perioperative bleeding and transfusion of blood products are major risk factors for morbidity and mortality. Timely diagnostic and goal-directed therapies aim at the reduction of bleeding and need for allogeneic transfusions.

Acute bleeding is an omnipresent challenge for all physicians. Uncontrolled hemorrhage is the most common preventable cause of death after trauma worldwide. In different surgical disciplines, hemorrhage represents an independent risk factor for increased postoperative morbimortality, directly affecting patients’ outcomes. This study asked anesthesiologists about their personal perceived challenges when treating bleeding patients.

The art of fluid administration and haemodynamic support is one of the most challenging aspects of current critical care practice. Although more than half the patients in intensive care units (ICU) receive blood transfusions there is little in the way of data to guide decisions on when to give transfusions. The American College of Physicians, among others, has published a transfusion algorithm.1 However, this is based, not on controlled clinical trials, but on expert opinion. Despite these guidelines, transfusion practice varies widely....
