Owing to their sessile nature, plants are easily affected by various extenal factors. Among those, drought and salinity are considered as the most common stresses, which often pose a threat to plant growth and development. Major effects of the drought and salinity are interconnected and drive similar series of molecular changes in plants.

Productivity of many crops is highly vulnerable to extreme external conditions. Environmental stress factors such as drought and salinity have become more and more serious due to climate change and appear in many areas worldwide with higher frequency.

Antimicrobial peptides play important roles in both plant and animal defense systems. Moreover, over-expression of CaAMP1 (Capsicum annuum antimicrobial protein 1), an antimicrobial protein gene isolated from C. annuum leaves infected with Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria, confers broad-spectrum resistance to hemibiotrophic bacterial and necrotrophic fungal pathogens in Arabidopsis.

It is well known that WRKY transcription factors play important roles in plant growth and development, defense regulation and stress responses. This suggested that the overexpression of CkWRKY33 led to an enhanced drought-stress tolerance in transgenic A. thaliana. Thus, CkWRKY33 may act as a positive regulator involved in the droughtstress responses in Caragana korshinskii.

Hypoxia induced by flooding causes significant losses to crop production almost every year. However, the molecular network of submergence signaling pathway is still poorly understood. According to previous studies, transgenic plants overexpressing the WRKY33 gene showed enhanced resistance to submergence stress.

The CRISPR/Cas9 system has recently been engineered to confer resistance to geminiviruses in plants. However, we show here that the usefulness of this antiviral strategy is undermined by off-target effects identified by deep sequencing in Arabidopsis. We construct two virus-inducible CRISPR/Cas9 vectors that efficiently inhibit beet severe curly top virus (BSCTV) accumulation in both transient assays (Nicotiana benthamiana) and transgenic lines (Arabidopsis).

Auxins play key roles in the phytohormone network. Early auxin response genes in the AUX/ IAA, SAUR, and GH3 families show functional redundancy, which makes it very difficult to study the functions of individual genes based on gene knockout analysis or transgenic technology.

As global warming becomes increasingly severe, it is urgent that we enhance the heat tolerance of crops. We previously reported that Arabidopsis thaliana PHOSPHOINOSITIDE-SPECIFIC PHOSPHOLIPASE C9 (AtPLC9) promotes heat tolerance.

The NAC (NAM, ATAF1/ATAF2, and CUC2) transcription factors belong to a large family of plantspecific transcription factors in monocot and dicot species. These transcription factors regulate the expression of stress tolerance-related genes that protect plants from various abiotic stresses, including drought, salinity, and low temperatures.

The mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), as a part of the MAPKKK-MAPKK-MAPK cascade, play crucial roles in plant development as an intracellular signal transduction pathway to respond various environmental signals. However, few MAPKK have been functionally characterized in grapevine.

Sheepgrass (Leymus chinensis (Trin.) Tzvel) is a perennial forage grass that can survive extreme freezing winters (− 47.5 °C) in China. In this study, we isolated an unknown function MYB transcription factor gene, LcMYB4, from sheepgrass. However, the function of LcMYB4 and its homologous genes has not been studied in other plants.

The main objective in this study was to analyze the salinity and drought tolerance of Arabidopsis thaliana overexpressing GmNAC019 using several physiological parameters. The obtained results are expected to provide more information on the role of GmNAC019 and its potential for improving transgenic crops’ performance under drought and salinity conditions.

Studies on soybean GmNAC085 transcription factor revealed that the gene expression in plants was induced by water shortage treatments and its overexpression in the model plant Arabidopsis displayed improved plant tolerance characteristics towards drought stress. In this study, we continued analyzing the biological functions of GmNAC085 using transgenic soybean system overexpressing GmNAC085 gene, by targeting at a number of plant physiological features and biochemical activities in response to limited water growing condition.

Drought is by far the most important environmental factor contributing to yield losses in crops, including soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]. To address this problem, a gene that encodes an osmotin-like protein isolated from Solanum nigrum var. americanum (SnOLP) driven by the UBQ3 promoter from Arabidopsis thaliana was transferred into the soybean genome by particle bombardment.

Promoters play important roles in gene expression and function. There are three basic types of promoters: Constitutive, specific, and inducible. Constitutive promoters are widely used in genetic engineering, but these promoters have limitations. Inducible promoters are activated by specific inducers.
