Translating Vietnamese texts into English

This paper presents a study into difficulties in English – Vietnamese translation faced by English-majored students. Although basic knowledge of English with four main skills is delivered to the students at the beginning of their academic courses at university, translation in general causes tons of troubles for them.

The primary aim of the thesis is to find out the second-year English majors‟ common errors on verb tenses and word choices in translating Vietnamese texts into English. The study also aims at finding causes of these problems and then suggesting some possible strategies to overcome the problems. The targeted subjects of this thesis are mainly students; nevertheless, all people who are interested in translation work can consider it as a useful reference for improving their translation skills as well.

The order of subject and object is an adequate criterion for distinguishing between them when other grammatical properties are ambiguous.HARPERl AND LEHISTE2 have discussed the order of subjects and predicates in Russian scientific text. Lehiste concludes that "form and function" should be used to distinguish the subject from the predicate of a Russian sentence; although her conclusion may be accepted (subject to assumptions about the value of maintaining customary English order in the output), her dictum must be converted into programmable instructions....

THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN undertook research, late in 1955, in the analysis of language structure for mechanical translation. Emphasis was placed on the use of the contextual structure of the sentence as a means of reducing ambiguity and on the formulation of a set of operative rules which an electronic computer could use for automatically translating Russian texts into English.
