Traumatic injuries

Increased survival from traumatic injury has led to a higher demand for follow-up care when patients are discharged from hospital. It is currently unclear how follow-up care following major trauma is provided to patients, and how, when, and to whom follow-up services are delivered. The aim of this study was to describe the current follow-up care provided to patients and their families who have experienced major traumatic injury in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ).

Although there are over 400,000 people each year in the United States alone who suffer from traumatic injury to the central nervous system (CNS), no phar­ macological treatment is currently available. Considering the enormity of the problem in terms of human tragedy as well as the economic burden to families and societies alike, it is surprising that so little effort is being made to develop treatments for these disorders.

Its aim, according to its chairman, Professor Francois Cohadon of Bordeaux, was primarily to review the current concept of brain ischaemia in trauma, its diagnosis and its clinical management. Professor Cohadon himself is pre-eminent in the field of accident and emergency surgery in France.

Phytochemical study on the leaves of Fissistigma balansae led to the isolation of one new sesquiterpene glycoside, (3S,6E)-3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-8-hydroxy-3,7,11-trimethyldodeca-1,6,10-triene, and six known compounds, aromandendrane-4β,10α-diol, phloridzosid, astragalin, isoquercitrin, and rutin, acanthoside B. Their chemical structures were identified by HR-ESI-MS and NMR (1D and 2D) spectra. This is the first report of these compounds from F. balansae.
