Tree based biological approach

Phylogenetic trees are useful tools to infer evolutionary relationships between genetic entities. Phylogenetics enables not only evolution-based gene clustering but also the assignment of gene duplication and deletion events to the nodes when coupled with statistical approaches such as bootstrapping. However, extensive gene duplication and deletion events bring along a challenge in interpreting phylogenetic trees and require manual inference.

In this study, a new approach for ML-based miRNA prediction is proposed. Thousands of models are generated through classification of known human miRNAs and pseudohairpins with 3 classifiers: decision tree, naïve Bayes, and random forest. Although the method is based on human data, the best model was able to correctly assign 96% of nonhuman hairpins from MirGeneDB, suggesting that this approach might be useful for the analysis of miRNAs from other species.

An investigation has been carried out to develop a biological treatment technology for the removal of odourous compounds from domestic sewage water. Under aerobic condition, free molecular oxygen is used by microbes as electron acceptor and produce water. Under anaerobic condition, if neither oxygen nor nitrate (NO3 - ) is present, microbes tend to use sulphate (SO4 2- ) as electron acceptor and generate volatile H2S.

Kernel based methods dominate the current trend for various relation extraction tasks including protein-protein interaction (PPI) extraction. PPI information is critical in understanding biological processes. Despite considerable efforts, previously reported PPI extraction results show that none of the approaches already known in the literature is consistently better than other approaches when evaluated on different benchmark PPI corpora.
