  • Automatically understanding chemical-disease relations (CDRs) is crucial in various areas of biomedical research and health care. Supervised machine learning provides a feasible solution to automatically extract relations between biomedical entities from scientific literature, its success, however, heavily depends on large-scale biomedical corpora manually annotated with intensive labor and tremendous investment.

  • Bixa orellana commonly known as annatto is one of the oldest known natural dye yielding plants native to Central and South America. Various parts of annatto have been widely used in the traditional medical system for prevention and treatment of a wide number of health disorders. The plethora of traditional uses has encouraged researchers to identify and isolate phytochemicals from all parts of this plant.

  • Microbiome research has transformed the scientific landscape, as reflected by the exponential increase in microbiome-related publications from many different disciplines. Host-associated microbial communities play a role for almost all aspects of human, animal and plant biology and health. Consequently, there are tremendous expectations for the development of new clinical, agricultural and biotechnological applications of microbiome research.

  • Despite the expertise and ingenuity of U.S. industry and tremendous productiv- ity of U.S. agriculture and forestry, plant-based sources cannot automatically shoulder a major share of our chemical feedstock demand. Today, U.S. industry only makes minor portions of some classes of chemical products from plant-derived materials. Important scientific and commercial development breakthroughs are needed. Petrochemicals, agriculture, forestry, and other industries—as well as government—must make major coordinated efforts to most effectively increase the use of plant-derived chemicals.

  • The main goal of this paper is to propose automatic schemes for the translation paired comparison method. This method was proposed to precisely evaluate a speech translation system's capability. Furthermore, the method gives an objective evaluation result, i.e., a score of the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC). The TOEIC score is used as a measure of one's speech translation capability. However, this method requires tremendous evaluation costs. Accordingly, automatization of this method is an important subject for study.

  • Structural elucidation of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from three nontypeable Haemophilus influenzaeclinical isolates, 1209, 1207 and 1233 was achieved using NMR spectro-scopy and ESI-MS on O-deacylated LPS and core oligo-saccharide (OS) material as well as ESI-MS n on permethylated dephosphorylated OS. It was found that the organisms expressed a tremendous heterogeneous glyco-form mixture resulting from the variable length of the OS chains attached to the common structural element of H.

  • It is innately human to comfort and provide care to those suffering from cancer, particularly those close to death. Yet what seems self-evident at an individual, personal level has, by and large, not guided policy at the level of institutions in this country. There is no argument that palliative care should be integrated into cancer care from diagnosis to death.

  • The functional and structural characterization of G-protein-coupled recep-tors (GPCRs) still suffers from tremendous difficulties during sample preparation. Cell-free expression has recently emerged as a promising alter-native approach for the synthesis of polytopic integral membrane proteins and, in particular, for the production of G-protein-coupled receptors.

Assistant Director Sandra Cummings, analyst-synthesist and semantician, was tall, blonde and svelte. Planetographer William Karns—a black-haired, blackbrowed, black-eyed man of thirty—was third in rank of the scientific group. "I'm telling you, Jarve, you can't have it both ways," Karns declared. • Why a book on injectable fillers? Astonishingly, there are few books on this subject. Furthermore, during the last decade we have seen a tremendous increase in the number of filler materials and a parallel increase in our knowledge about them. Treatments have become more subtle and now include more indications. The task of this book is therefore twofold. First, to give an overview on the most common biodegradable and nonbiodegradable fillers and to give parallely some advice about how to approach new fillers, which are often accompanied by marketing myths rather than good scientific data.

  • Work on Deisboeck and Kresh's Complex Systems Science in BioMedicine started years ago. In fact, thoughts and ideas leading up to this textbook date back to our first conversation, sometime in the fall of 1996. We quickly found common ground, and talked about emergence and self-organization and their relevance for medicine. We were both fascinated by the idea of complexity and marveled about its tremendous possibilities for cancer research, which was then and still is Tom's main scientific interest. Much has happened in science and technology since we first discussed our vision.
