Trichome development

The cultivated tetraploid cotton species (AD genomes) was originated from two ancestral diploid species (A and D genomes). While the ancestral Agenome species produce spinnable fibers, the D- genome species do not. Cotton fibers are unicellular trichomes originating from seed coat epidermal cells, and currently there is an immense interest in understanding the process of fiber initiation and development.

Cotton stem trichomes and seed fibers are each single celled structures formed by protrusions of epidermal cells, and were found sharing the overlapping molecular mechanism. Compared with fibers, cotton stem trichomes are more easily observed, but the molecular mechanisms underlying their development are still poorly understood.

Trichomes are excellent model systems for the analysis of cell differentiation and play essential roles in plant protection. From cucumber inbred line ‘WD1’, we identified an EMS-induced trichome abnormally developing mutant, nps, which exhibited smaller, denser and no pyramid-shaped head trichomes.

Trichomes play a key role in the development of plants and exist in a wide variety of species. This review further displayed the complex and differential regulatory networks in trichome initiation and development, provided a reference for basic and applied research on trichomes in plants.

Lonicera japonica Thunb. (L. japonica) has the functions of clearing away heat and detoxifying, broadspectrum antibacterial and anti-virus, etc. More than 70% of anti-inflammatory and cold Chinese patent medicines contain L. japonica. Trichomes comprise specialized multicellular structures that have the capacity to synthesize and secrete secondary metabolites and protect plants from biotic and abiotic stresses.

A molecular-level understanding of the loss of CURVY1 (CVY1) gene expression (which encodes a member of the receptor-like protein kinase family) was investigated to gain insights into the mechanisms controlling cell morphogenesis and development in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Trichomes, developed from the protodermal cells (the outermost cell layer of the embryo), are hairlike structures covering the aerial parts of plants. The genetic network regulating trichome development has been extensively studied and well understood in the model species Arabidopsis thaliana, which bears unicellular, nonglandular and branched trichomes.

Type VI glandular trichomes represent the most abundant trichome type on leaves and stems of tomato plants and significantly contribute to herbivore resistance, particularly in the wild species. Despite this, their development has been poorly studied so far.

Through evolution, some plants have developed natural resistance to insects by having hairs (trichomes) on leaves and other tissues. The hairy trait has been neglected in Brassica breeding programs, which mainly focus on disease resistance, yield, and overall crop productivity.

Two types of glandular trichomes i.e. Capitate triangular glandular and Capitate globular glandular were recorded in sunflower. Nitrogen availability regulates globular glandular trichomes development from epidermal cells by cell division via cross talk of cytokinin in roots to plant metabolic pathways in leaves. The size of trichomes on sunflower leaves may be altered with the amino acid composition and levels mobilized from older leaves under nitrogen deficiency.

Tomato is the second most important vegetable grown in India. It faces heavy attack by pest and diseases in tropical countries. Biotic and abiotic stress is major challenge for higher production of tomatoes. Thrips complex are important sucking pests which also cause more damage as vector species for virus diseases. So controlling the vector by screening against thrips damage/preference is the major concern for screening and developing lines resistant to thrips.

The present study data indicate that wheat trichomes are glandular trichomes. The frequency and development of these trichomes was affected by irradiance. The density of trichomes was negatively correlated with number of phenolic compounds in wheats.

Sorghum is an essential crop in the semi-arid tropics being attacked by nearly 150 species of insects, out of which Chilo partellus is the more devastating pest. Based on the foliar damage the resistance and susceptible genotypes of sorghum can be screened. For further understanding of the host plant resistance relationship between sorghum and stem borer the orientation behaviour and larval establishment behaviour can be studied. The host plant resistance in sorghum to C. partellus can be either morphological or biochemical.

Plant hairiness or pubescence as a specific phenotypical feature related to dehydration tolerance and resistance to leaf vermin is considered in this paper. A method for the isolation of trichomes, earlier developed for Arabidopsis Heynh., was found to be appropriate for the separation of similar polarised cells from pubescent wheat, Triticum aestivum L., lines, as well as some other higher plant species

When I was asked by Timber Press to write a new book on resins, including amber—Howes’s 1949 Vegetable Gums and Resins was the most recent such effort—the breadth of interdisciplinary coverage seemed too ambitious for an individual person. There have been so many advances in resin research in the past half century, including the development of new fields of research such as chemical ecology, and the exploration of other interesting facets about resins made possible by new chemical, molecular, and microscopic techniques.
