  • Forest fires present a significant threat to the tropical forest ecosystem in the northwestern region of Vietnam. Our study aimed to assess the impacts of environmental factors on forest fire occurrence and to map forest fire probability for the whole region. The forest fire occurrence data over the period 2003–2016, environmental factors (climate, fuel condition, topography, and human activity), and the MaxEnt approach were used for this study.

  • Spatial patterns of forest trees have been long recognized as evidences of underlying biological processes within forests. We used point pattern analysis methods and process-based models to detect the demography and dynamics of trees in a primary rainforest stand. A fully mapped 1-ha plot was investigated in the tropical rain forest of Cuc Phuong National Park. Trees were stem-mapped, diameter-measured at breast height and classified into species.

  • Spatial association and species diversity of species-rich tropical forests can be characterized by their spatial patterns. We applied the quantitative analyses based on relationships of spatial distribution of tree species. In a 2-ha plot of a tropical broadleaved forest stand in Kon Ha Nung, Gia Lai province, all tree individuals with DBH ≥ 2.5 cm were mapped and their characteristics (i.e., DBH and species) were recorded.

  • In this study, our overall goal is to characterize spatial attributes of neighborhood trees by applying the current techniques of nearest neighbor statistics. For a better understanding of structural units, we three structural units for each species analyses, such as mingling - index, mingling - dominance and dominance uniform angle index.

  • Structural and spatial patterns of tree species in forests are important indicators to explain which underlying mechanisms or processes regulating forest structure. In this article, techniques of spatial point pattern analysis were used to characterize structural and spatial patterns of two secondary rain forest stands in Cuc phuong National park, Vietnam.

  • Ebook "Bioenergy from wood: Sustainable production in the tropics (Managing forest ecosystems, Volume 26)" is written for scientists and practitioners interested in deepening their knowledge of the sustainable production of bioenergy from wood in tropical and sub-tropical countries. Utilising the value chain concept, this book outlines the necessary aspects for managing sustainable bioenergy production. A wide range of topics is covered including biomass localization, modelling and upscaling, production management in woodlands and plantations, and transport and logistics.

  • In ebook "Ecology and the environment (The plant sciences series)" plant biology is considered from the perspective of plants and their surrounding environment, including both biotic and abiotic interactions. The intended audience is undergraduate students in the middle or final phases of their programs of study.

  • Ebook "Neotropical insect galls" brings to light the most recent findings on the biogeography, biodiversity, host plant induction and natural history of gall inducing insects in the Neotropical region. We attempt to summarize the work done so far in the region, promote several syntheses on many aspects such as host induction, host specialization, distribution among the several vegetation types and zones, the origin of super hosts and the mechanisms leading to geographical patterns in their distribution.

  • Ebook "Studying vibrational communication (Animal signals and communication, Volume 3)" explains the key ideas, questions and methods involved in studying the hidden world of vibrational communication in animals. The authors dispel the notion that this form of communication is difficult to study and show how vibrational signaling is a key to social interactions in species that live in contact with a substrate, whether it be a grassy lawn, a rippling stream or a tropical forest canopy. This ancient and widespread form of social exchange is also remarkably understudied.

  • Ebook "New perspectives in the study of Mesoamerican primates: Distribution, ecology, behavior, and conservation" is to present a comprehensive overview of recent advances in primate field research, ecology, and conservation biology in Mesoamerica. The overall goal of each contribution is to integrate newly collected field data with theoretical perspectives drawn from evolutionary biology, socioecology, biological anthropology, and conservation to identify how our current knowledge of primate behavior and ecology has moved beyond more traditional approaches.

  • Ebook "The future of the world’s forests: Ideas vs Ideologies" seeks answers to this question. It examines the often dysfunctional relationships between various members of the international forest constituency, which have so often prevented the formation of consensus. It also explores the tendency to pursue technical and politically convenient ‘fixes’ focused on the internal workings of the forest sector, while ignoring the overwhelming influence of external forces on the fate of forests.

  • Ebook "Regreening the bare hills: Tropical forest restoration in the Asia-Pacific region" represents a valuable resource for reforestation managers and policy makers wishing to promote these new silvicultural approaches, as well as for conservationists, development experts and researchers with an interest in forest restoration. Combining a theoretical-research perspective with practical aspects of restoration, the book will be equally valuable to practitioners and academics, while the lessons drawn from these discussions will have relevance elsewhere throughout the tropics.
