In order to formulate the research questions a review of the literature was conducted, from which three questions emerged relating to the issue surrounding one’s decision to enroll in a fine arts course and the professional ‘use value’ of the human capital accumulated during this type of education.

The organization of Arabidopsis thaliana photosystem II (PSII) and its associated light-harvesting antenna (LHCII) was studied in isolated PSII–LHCII supercomplexes and native membrane-bound crystals by transmission electron microscopy and image analysis. Over 4000 single-particle projections of PSII– LHCII supercomplexes were analyzed. In comparison to spinach supercomplexes [Boekema, E.J., van Roon, H., van Breemen, J.F.L. & Dekker, J.P. (1999) Eur. A severe challenge to the idea that mitochondrial DNA mutations play a major role in the aging process in mammals is that clear loss-of-function mutations accumulate only to very low levels (under 1% of total) in almost any tissue, even by very old age. Their accumulation is punctate: some cells become nearly devoid of wild-type mitochondrial DNA and exhibit no activity for the partly mitochondrially encoded enzyme cytochrome c oxidase. Such cells accumulate in number with aging, suggesting that they survive indefinitely, which is itself paradoxical....

Several microbial pathogens have been reported to interact with glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) on cell surfaces and in the extracellularmatrix. Herewe demonstrate thatM protein, a major surface-expressed virulence factor of the human bac-terial pathogen, Streptococcus pyogenes, mediates binding to various forms of GAGs. Hence, S. pyogenesstrains expressing a large number of different types of M proteins bound to dermatan sulfate (DS), highly sulfated fractions of heparan sulfate (HS) and heparin, whereas strains deficient in M protein surface expression failed to interact with these GAGs. ...

Plasminogen activator inhibitor type-2 (PAI-2) is a nonconventional serine protease inhibitor (serpin) with unique and tantalizing properties that is generally considered to be an authentic and physiological inhibitor of uro-kinase. However, the fact that only a small percentage of PAI-2 is secreted has been a long-standing argument for alternative roles for this serpin.

Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasitic protozoan that causes Chagas disease, contains a major cysteine proteinase, cruzipain. This lysosomal enzyme bears an unusual C-terminal extension that contains a number of post-translational modifications, and most antibodies in natural and experimen-tal infections are directed against it. In this report we took advantage of UV-MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry in conjunction with peptide N-gly-cosidase F deglycosylation and high performance anion exchange chroma-tography analysis to address the structure of the N-linked oligosaccharides present in this domain. ...

Glutamine is an essential amino acid in cancer cells and is required for the growth of many other cell types. Glutami-nase activity is positively correlated with malignancy in tumours andwith growth rate in normal cells. In the present work, Ehrlich ascites tumour cells, and their derivative, 0.28AS-2 cells, expressing antisense glutaminase mRNA, were assayed for apoptosis induced by methotrexate and hydrogen peroxide. It is shown that Ehrlich ascites tumour cells, expressing antisense mRNA for glutaminase, contain lower levels of glutathione than normal ascites cells. In addition, 0.

A 140-kDa soluble form of the low density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor has been isolated from the culture medium of HepG2 cells and a number of other cell types. It is produced from the 160-kDa mature LDL receptor by a proteolytic cleavage, which is stimulated in the presence of 4b-phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA), leading to the release of a soluble fragment that constitutes the bulk of the extracellular domain of the LDL receptor.

The sequencing of the genome ofRalstonia solanacearum[Salanoubat M, Genin S, Artiguenave F,et al.(2002) Nature415, 497–502] revealed several genes that putatively code for polyphenol oxidases (PPOs). This soil-borne pathogenic bacterium withers a wide range of plants. We detected the expression of two PPO genes (accession numbers NP_518458 and NP_519622) with high similarity to tyrosinases, both containing the six conserved histidines required to bind the pair of type-3 copper ions at the active site....

A number of drugs used in cancer chemotherapy induce oxidative stress by generation of oxygen free radicals (ROS) which might be an alternative mechanism for their cytotoxic effect via indu-cing apoptosis. In order to clarify the roles of antioxidants in chemotherapy, we investigated Quercetin (3,3’,4’,5,7-pentahyd-roxyflavone) and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) in different cell types treated with anticancer drugs. We studied cytotoxic activity of Topotecan alone and/or in combination with Quercetin in two human breast cancer cell lines, MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231. ...

Huntingtin protein (Htt), whose mutation causes Huntington’s disease (HD), interacts with large numbers of proteins that participate in diverse cellular pathways. This observation indicates that wild-type Htt is involved in various cellular processes and that the mutated Htt alters these processes in HD.

Type II transmembrane serine proteases are an emerging class of proteo-lytic enzymes involved in tissue homeostasis and a number of human disor-ders such as cancer. To better define the biochemical functions of a subset of these proteases, we compared the enzymatic properties of matriptase, matriptase-2, hepsin and DESC1 using a series of internally quenched fluorogenic peptide substrates containingo-aminobenzoyl and 3-nitro-tyro-sine.

Membrane-type 1 matrix metalloproteinase (MT1-MMP) is a proteinase involved in the remodelling of extracellular matrix and the cleavage of a number of substrates. MT1-MMP is synthesized as a zymogen that requires intracellular post-translational cleavage to gain biological activity. Furin, a member of the pro-protein convertase family, has been implicated in the proteolytic removal of the MT1-MMP prodomain sequence.

In this paper, we study the growth of sX(L), the number of simple closed geodesics of length ≤ L on a complete hyperbolic surface X of finite area. We also study the frequencies of different types of simple closed geodesics on X and their relationship with the Weil-Petersson volumes of moduli spaces of bordered Riemann surfaces.

We prove that a type II1 factor M can have at most one Cartan subalgebra A satisfying a combination of rigidity and compact approximation properties. We use this result to show that within the class HT of factors M having such Cartan subalgebras A ⊂ M , the Betti numbers of the standard equivalence relation associated with A ⊂ M ([G2]), are in fact isomorphism invariants for HT the factors M , βn (M ), n ≥ 0. The class HT is closed under amplifications HT HT and tensor products,

We consider a specialization of an untwisted quantum affine algebra of type ADE at a nonzero complex number, which may or may not be a root of unity. The Grothendieck ring of its finite dimensional representations has two bases, simple modules and standard modules. We identify entries of the transition matrix with special values of “computable” polynomials, similar to Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. At the same time we “compute” q-characters for all simple modules. The result is based on “computations” of Betti numbers of graded/cyclic quiver varieties.
