Determine the coefficient of water permeability, waterproofing marks, chloride ion diffusion coefficients of some types of concrete commonly used in bridge construction subjected to pre-compressive and direct-compression loads. Develop a predictive model for life expectancy using reinforced concrete bridges taking into consideration the effect of the load according to the criteria of initial corrosion of reinforcement in concrete. Application of life expectancy for the structure of reinforced concrete bridges.

Stress is the “wear and tear” our minds and bodies experience as we attempt to cope with our continually changing environment. Stress mainly occurs when the pressure is greater than the resource.

The problem of thermoelastic nanoscale beam based on a modified couple stress theory with diffusion subjected to ramp type heating is investigated. The Laplace transform technique and eigen value approach are applied to solve the equations which are written in the dimensionless form.

The article discusses the strength of concrete and other brittle materials in the case of nonuniform biaxial type of compression (σ1 > σ2 > 0) and triaxial compression of σ1 > σ2 = σ3 > 0 type (it was assumed that σ> 0 corresponds to compression). I

Generation of residual stress and structure deformation are the most important problems in the process of structure welding. Residual stresses inside and around the welded joints are harmful for integrity and proper functioning of the welded part.

Oligomerization into multimeric complexes is a prerequisite for the chaperone function of almost all a-crystallin type heat shock proteins (a-Hsp), but the molecular details of complex assembly are poorly understood. The a-Hsp proteins from Bradyrhizobium japonicum are suitable bacterial models for structure-function studies of these ubiquitous stress proteins. They fall into two distinct classes, A and B, display chaperone activity in vitro and form oligomers of 24 subunits.

Oviparously developing embryos of the brine shrimp, Artemia franciscana, synthesize abundant quantities of a small heat shock/a-crystallin protein, termed p26. Wild-type p26 functions as a molecular chaperone in vitro and is thought to help encysted Artemia embryos survive severe physiological stress encountered during diapause and anoxia. Full-length and truncated p26 cDNA derivatives were generated by PCR amplification of p26-3-6-3, then cloned in either pET21(+) or pRSETC and expressed in Escherichia coli BL21(DE3)....

Double-stranded RNA-activated protein kinase (PKR), a serine/threonine kinase, is activated in virus-infected cells and acts as an antiviral machinery of type I interferons. PKR controls several stress response pathways induced by double-stranded RNA, tumor necrosis factor-aor lipo-polysaccharide, which result in the activation of stress-acti-vated protein kinase/c-Jun NH2 -terminal kinase and p38 of the mitogen-activated protein kinase family.

Halobacterium salinarumdisplays four distinct kinetic forms of M-intermediate in its bacteriorhodopsin photocycle. In wild-type, there are mainly two species with time constants near 2 and 5 ms. Under various kinds of stress, two other species arise with time constants near 10 and 70 ms. We show that these four species are interconvertible. Increases in membrane hydrophobicity convert the slower to faster forms. Perturbations caused by Triton X-100 or mutations convert faster to slower forms.

A number of drugs used in cancer chemotherapy induce oxidative stress by generation of oxygen free radicals (ROS) which might be an alternative mechanism for their cytotoxic effect via indu-cing apoptosis. In order to clarify the roles of antioxidants in chemotherapy, we investigated Quercetin (3,3’,4’,5,7-pentahyd-roxyflavone) and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) in different cell types treated with anticancer drugs. We studied cytotoxic activity of Topotecan alone and/or in combination with Quercetin in two human breast cancer cell lines, MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231. ...

DNA topoisomerase 6 (TOP6) belongs to a novel family of type II DNA topoisomerases present, other than in archaebacteria, only in plants. Here we report the isolation of full-length cDNAs encoding putative TOP6 sub-units A and B from rice (Oryza sativassp.indica), preserving all the struc-tural domains conserved among archaebacterial TOP6 homologs and eukaryotic meiotic recombination factor SPO11.

Hsp105aand Hsp105bare major heat shock proteins in mammalian cells that belong to a subgroup of the HSP70 family, HSP105⁄110. Previously, we have shown that Hsp105ahas opposite effects on stress-induced apop-tosis depending on the cell type. However, it is not fully understood how Hsp105 regulates stress-induced apoptosis.

Oxidative stress, followed by the apoptotic death of pancreaticbcells, is considered to be one of causative agents in the evolution of the type 2 dia-betic state; therefore, the protection ofbcells can comprise an efficacious strategy for preventing type 2 diabetes. In the present study, RIN-m5F cells (i.e. the rat insulinoma bcell line) were stimulated with streptozotocin, resulting in a time- and concentration-dependent release of lactate dehydrogenase.
