Cobalt (Co) Metal plays an increasingly important role in the battery and engine manufacturing industry for electric cars. Previously most of Co was mined as by-productin copper ore deposits in Central Africa. Recently, the proportion of Co extracted fromother sources such as weathering-derived mines on ultramafic rocks is increasing.

Sedimentary- and vein-type magnesites were deposited within and on ultramafic rocks of the Kop Mountain region in Bayburt province. In the field, magnesites are exposed along NE-SW trending normal faults and in fractures in the ultramafic rocks. Petrographic studies reveal that magnesite is predominantly micrite, but also occurs as microsparite formed by recrystallization of micrite.

The regionally important dismembered ophiolitic sequence from the southern Kahramanmaraş region, located along the Arabian-Eurasian collision zone in southeastern Turkey, contains harzburgitic tectonites, ultramafic to mafic cumulates, isotropic gabbros and ophiolite-related metamorphic rocks. The ultramafic-mafic cumulate rocks are composed of wehrlite, lherzolite, olivine websterite, olivine gabbronorite, olivine gabbro and gabbro.

The first and second melting events occurred at Tor Zawar, Ziarat on 27 January 2010, and sometime during the month of January 2011; the third melting event occurred on 12 February 2011. All these events occurred near the base of steel pylons of electric transmission lines installed on hillside outcrops, which transmitted atmospheric lightning to the outcrop.

Al-rich spinels were rarely reported compared to Cr-spinels, which were mostly observed in ophiolitic rocks. Pleonaste [(Mg, Fe2+)Al2 O4 ], which is an Al-rich spinel, was observed in the ophiolitic mafic–ultramafic rocks tectonically located in the Early Cretaceous accretionary complex, at the eastern part of the Armutlu peninsula, NW Turkey.

The data were interpreted for source geochemical characteristics and geodynamic processes of the lithospheric mantle beneath the region. The peridotite xenoliths being mostly spinel-lherzolites in composition, are residual entities having been produced following partial melting events of ultramafic rocks in the asthenosphere. They are depleted in trace element abundance and Sr-Nd isotopic composition. Some are even more depleted as compared to mid-ocean ridge mantle xenoliths.
