Anxiety and depression are common co-morbidities in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Serious implications can result from psychological difficulties in COPD including reduced survival, lower quality of life, and reduced physical and social functioning, increased use of health care resources and are associated with unhealthy behaviours such as smoking.

Links between participating in unhealthy behaviours, e.g. smoking, and an increased risk of developing some cancers are well established. Unemployed adults are more likely to participate in cancer-related health behaviours than their employed counterparts.

Habit is defined as a process whereby an impulse towards behaviour is automatically initiated upon encountering a setting in which the behaviour has been performed in the past. A central tenet of habit theory is that habit overrides intentional tendencies in directing behaviour, such that as habit strength increases, intention becomes less predictive of behaviour.

Obesity, weight dysregulation and various degenerative diseases which are present at a huge scale are repercussions of low physical activity and unhealthy eating habits. Dietary risks, which include diets low in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, but high in salt and fat, were found to be India’s third leading risk factor for causing disease burden, after child and maternal malnutrition and air pollution; followed closely by high blood pressure and high blood sugar.

By focusing on the disease endpoint, and how various kinds of diseases are impacted by environmental influences, the analysis forges new ground in an understanding of interactions between environment and health. The estimates, in effect, reflect how much death, illness and disability could realistically be avoided every year as a result of reduced human exposures to environmental hazards. Specifically considered here are "modifiable" environmental factors realistically amenable to change using available technologies, policies, and preventive and public health measures.

The second challenge is to ensure that health is prioritized within overall development and economic policies. This means looking beyond the health system and addressing the broad determinants of ill-health - low levels of education, poverty, unequal gender relations, high risk behaviours, and an unhealthy environment - as well as raising the profile of health within national poverty reduction and government reform processes.
