Urinary tract infection in infants

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is an important cause of morbidity in infants. The incidence of UTI is more common among boys. Inappropriately treated cases of UTI can further lead to major acute complications such as cystitis, pyelonephritis, bacteremia. Timely diagnosis and treatment is of paramount importance to prevent rare but serious complications. The objective of this study is to isolate and identify the organisms causing UTI in infants and to study antibiotic susceptibility pattern of the isolated organisms.

Coagulase negative staphylococci (CoNS) were generally considered to be contaminants in the past having little clinical significance. Over the past two decades, these organisms have become recognized as important agents of human disease. S. epidermidis is the predominant agent in nosocomial infection, bacteremia, surgical wound and urinary tract infections. Their pathogenic potential is being increasingly understood and also causing problems to clinicians because of their drug resistance.

Children with Kawasaki disease (KD) and pyuria have been misdiagnosed with urinary tract infection (UTI). We compared clinical and laboratory features at admission between two groups of infants under 6 months of age who showed initial pyuria, to identify the initial clues suggestive of KD.

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common disease affecting especially infants and young children. The clinical presentations are diverse, from an unaffected infant with asymptomatic bacteriuria to a severely septic child. Accurate and timely diagnosis and treatment is important for the prevention of long-term morbidity and sequelae (e.g. hypertension, proteinuria, and chronic kidney disease). The purpose of the present study was to determine the validity of rapidly diagnostic tests for the early detection of UTIs in paediatric patients. Total 247 midstream urine specimens were processed.
