Ebook "Elucidation of abiotic stress signaling in plants: Functional genomics perspectives, Volume 2" provides timely research in the fi eld of stress-mediated signaling to develop a better and holistic understanding of stress perception and its transduction followed by the generation of response. In spite of the advent of different approaches to develop stress-tolerant crops towards multiple stress conditions in the fi eld, the success in achieving this goal is still unsatisfactory.

In this study, we investigated changes in withanolide accumulation and characterized the gene expression level changes of squalene synthase enzyme in P. peruviana shoot cultures exposed to mild nonlethal heat stress (45°C for 2 and 5 h) and UV-B radiation (313 nm for 15 min and 3 h). We demonstrated significant changes in withanolide content with 7.86- and 12.5-fold increases for 2- and 5-hmild high-temperature exposure times, respectively. Exposure to UV-B also changed the withanolide content by 7.22- and 7-fold increases for 15 min and 3 h exposure times, respectively.

Pachycladon cheesemanii is a close relative of Arabidopsis thaliana and is an allotetraploid perennial herb which is widespread in the South Island of New Zealand. It grows at altitudes of up to 1000 m where it is subject to relatively high levels of ultraviolet (UV)-B radiation.

High-temperature stress (HTS) is one of the main environmental stresses that limit plant growth and crop production in agricultural systems. Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is an important high-altitude herbaceous plant adapted to a wide range of environmental stimuli such as cold, strong wind and UV-B exposure.

Physiological and biochemical variation have been investigated under UVB stress on cyanobacterium Spirulina platensis. Morphological examinations showed significant change in terms of granulation, pigmentation, both apical and terminal end of filaments, showing altered emission intensity of pigment and changes in morphological structure of sheath in UV B treated as compared to untreated counterpart could observed respectively by bright field, fluorescent and scanning electron microscopy. Ultraviolet B (UV-B) irradiation has an adverse effect on plant cells because it causes the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This is scavenged by some endogenous defense systems. In this study, the activities of H2O2- detoxifying antioxidant enzymes in 4 barley cultivars pretreated with high temperature or NaCl before UV-B irradiation were investigated.

Cartilage provides our joints with load support and lubrication for decades of continuous use with minimal friction or damage. These unusual bearing properties are in fact due to a biphasic tissue structure (containing both fluid and solid matrices) and the pressurization of interstitial fluid during dynamic deformations.
