Value addition of millets products

In the present study efforts has been made to study the awareness and impacts of adopting millets products as income venture for SHG women in Kancheepuram District.

In present investigation attempts have been made to develop nutrient rich vermicelli by addition of wheat and malted ragi flour in different proportions (90:10 80:20, 70:30, 60:40 and 50:50) for optimization of ratio for production of better quality vermicelli. It was observed that among all the formulations tried, vermicelli sample prepared with 70:30 (wheat: malted ragi flour) combination had similar sensory score as that of control.

In rural India, the percentage of women who depend on agriculture for their livelihood is as high as 84%.Apart from participation in actual cultivation; women participate in various forms of processing and marketing of agricultural produce. Women accounted for 93% of total employment in dairy production. To begin with training programmes were started to self-help groups (SHG) on labour saving equipment, processing, value addition and storage of grains followed by model processing units establishment in rural areas. Workshops and melas were also conducted for empowerment of women in SHGs.

The study was conducted in Dharmapuri district, Tamil Nadu to examine the cost and returns of organic ragi production and to analyze the marketing efficiency and constraints in marketing. Certified organic farmers who got group organic certification from TNOCD were contacted for the study. Cost of cultivation and returns were assessed using CACP approach and marketing channel was identified. Price spread and marketing efficiency was assessed using Acharya’s approach for the identified marketing channel. The cost of cultivation of organic ragi was Rs.

An investigation was conducted to assess the magnitude of genetic variability, heritability (broad sense) and genetic advance as per cent of mean in 100 foxtail millet genetic resources for 18 metric traits. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed highly significant differences among the genetic resources for all the metric traits studied. Phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) was greater than genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) for all the characters studied indicating that these characters were highly influenced by the environmental effects.

To uplift the livelihood and financial conditions of the rural women value addition of minor millets can offer tremendous opportunity not only to income rather it increase national productivity and generates employment but also helps to develop economic independence and personal and social upliftment. Smt. Rathnamma is one such example who is from a small village named Gundamanatta in Srinivaspur Taluk of Kolar district. We have formed “Vaibhav Siridhanya Swasahaya Sanga” for processing of Minor Millets.
