Variability of aromatic rice

Quantum of genetic variability and the extent to which heritable and nonheritable variations are related to the characters, determines the extent of genetic amelioration. The present investigation was carried out in kharif, 2019 to understand the clustering pattern and correlation for yield attributing traits in aromatic landraces of rice. Here 90 aromatic rice landraces along with six check varieties were evaluated for 10 quantitative characters. Cluster analysis divided these 96 rice genotypes into 4 clusters.

The panel comprises of landraces, improved varieties, interspecific derivatives (Oryza glaberrima× Oryza sativa), aromatic and japonica rice etc. were evaluated during Kharif 2019 used for studying genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance for yield and its related traits in rice.

The present study was undertaken with the objective to determine the nature and magnitude of genetic variability, degree of association between yield and its component characters and their direct, indirect effects on grain yield in F7 generation of aromatic rice. The present experiment was carried out with fifty-five aromatic rice genotypes which were evaluated in randomized block design with three replications at Rice section farm, Agricultural Research Station, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad during Kharif, 2011.

The genetic diversity estimation was carried out in sixty seven germplasm of rice using Mahalanobis D2 by considering 32 yield and quality characters. ANOVA revealed the presence of considerable amount of variability among the genotypes studied.

Effect of 250Gy, 300Gy, 350Gy and 400Gy gamma rays on Badsabhog, popular nonbasmati aromatic landraces of West Bengal was studied in M1 generation under field condition. In general, plant height, number of total tillers, effective tillers plant1 , panicle exertion, spikelet number panicle-1 , filled grains panicles-1 , productive tiller hill-1 , spikelet fertility (%), and grain yield plant-1 decreased with increase in dose at variable rate due to negative effect of mutation.

Sixty rice genotypes were evaluated during kharif 2014 for sixteen quantitative and quality traits to examine the nature and magnitude of variability, heritability, genetic advance and correlation. Analysis of variance revealed that the differences among sixty genotypes were significant for all the characters. The characters viz., number of effective tillers per plant, seeds per panicle and brown rice length exhibited high Genotypic Coefficient of Variation (GCV) and Phenotypic Coefficient of Variation (PCV).

Adoption is a process of making a decision about an innovation of technology option offered to anyone. Even though we have brought about green revolution and moving for second green revolution, more than 60% of technology cannot reach the domain of farmer‟s innovation decision. So the present study takes care of adoption process of „Gobindabhog‟ famous traditional aromatic rice, to explore the process and complexity of its adoption and subsequent socialization. Aromatic rice like Gobindabhog has got social, ecological and economic importance.
