Variability studies for quantitative traits

Drought is a major threat to wheat production worldwide and development of drought-tolerant wheat genotypes may improve the production of this cereal crop in drought affected regions. In the present study, 24 mutant lines were developed by treating a wheat variety ‘NN-Gandum-1(NN-1) with ethyl methane sulfonate (EMS). The M5 , M6 , and M7 generations were evaluated for quantitative traits under well irrigated and rainfed conditions. Furthermore, best performing mutants of M6 and M7 generations were examined for biochemical parameters.

Quantum of genetic variability and the extent to which heritable and nonheritable variations are related to the characters, determines the extent of genetic amelioration. The present investigation was carried out in kharif, 2019 to understand the clustering pattern and correlation for yield attributing traits in aromatic landraces of rice. Here 90 aromatic rice landraces along with six check varieties were evaluated for 10 quantitative characters. Cluster analysis divided these 96 rice genotypes into 4 clusters.

The sensitivity of rice to high temperature varies with growth phase, an increase in day/night temperature and genotype (Yoshida et al., 1981). Planning and execution of any breeding program for improvement on quantitative traits depends on magnitude of genetic variability.

Hence the present investigation carried out for genetic variability for quantitative and qualitative traits in genotypes of tomato. The knowledge of genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variation is being useful in designing selection criteria from variable population. In general, it was noted that the value of phenotypic coefficient of variation is higher than the genotypic Coefficient of Variation For all the traits.

The success of most crop improvement programs depends on variability and heritability of desirable traits. An investigation was carried out during kharif 2016 at Botanical garden, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, India to assess the extent of variability generated by hybridization and to estimate the heritability and genetic advance as percent of mean for seed cotton yield and its component traits in F2 generation of cross QTP 16 × ASa 151. The segregating population thus obtained was evaluated for eight quantitative traits.

The present investigation was carried out at Horticultural Research Station, Mondouri, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Mohanpur, Nadia, West Bengal, India during spring summer seasons of 2015, 2016 and 2017 in a Randomized Block Design with three replications. The morphological characterization was done as per minimal descriptors of NBPGR developed for bottle gourd. The results revealed that the greatest diversity was observed in fruit characters especially fruit shape and fruit colour among the genotypes for various characters studied.

Phenome-wide association studies (PheWAS) are a high-throughput approach to evaluate comprehensive associations between genetic variants and a wide range of phenotypic measures. PheWAS has varying sample sizes for quantitative traits, and variable numbers of cases and controls for binary traits across the many phenotypes of interest, which can affect the statistical power to detect associations.

The analysis of variance revealed significant differences among genotypes for all the characters. Studies of genetic variability revealed high phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation, heritability and genetic advance as per cent of mean for the traits viz., number of basal tillers per plant, no. of productive tillers per plant, main ear width, grain yield per plant and grain yield per plot indicating simple selection can be practiced for improvement of these characters.
