Variability studies in foxtail millet

Present investigation of genetic variability, correlation and path analysis for yield and yield contributing characters in 22 genotypes of foxtail millet was carried out during kharif, 2019 at JNKVV, College of agriculture (Rewa, M.P.). Mean value of ear length and grain yield per plant was also observed highest for genotypes SiA-3159.

The present investigation was carried out in foxtail millet to measure the variability, heritability and genetic advance using 40 genotypes. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications at National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources, Regional Station, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad during Kharif, 2015.

Starches from the wheat (UP262, PBW343), rice (PB2, PD19) and millets (Finger millet VL Mandua-352, Barnyard millet VL Madira-207, Foxtail millet DHFT-109-3) were isolated by alkali extraction method and characterized for morphologically and biochemical properties. The morphological properties of starch granules were studied by scanning electron microscope. The infrared spectroscopy is sensitive to structural changes on starch macromolecule, such as helicoidal chain conformation, crystallinity, retrogradation and water content.

An investigation was conducted to assess the magnitude of genetic variability, heritability (broad sense) and genetic advance as per cent of mean in 100 foxtail millet genetic resources for 18 metric traits. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed highly significant differences among the genetic resources for all the metric traits studied. Phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) was greater than genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) for all the characters studied indicating that these characters were highly influenced by the environmental effects.
