Various livestock species

We implemented a longitudinal study to determine the incidence of Brucella infection in cattle, camels, sheep and goats that were being raised in a pastoral area in Isiolo County, Kenya. An initial cross-sectional survey was implemented to identify unexposed animals for follow up; that survey used 141 camels, 216 cattle, 208 sheep and 161 goats.

The CRISPR-Cas9 system is a widely utilized platform for transgenic animal production in various species, although its off-target effects should be addressed. Several applications of this tool have been proposed in model animals but remain insufficient for transgenic livestock production.

The indigenous technical knowledge (ITK) regarding animal husbandry is considered as old as domestication of various livestock species. Unfortunately, these practices which are in vogue throughout the rural India are little documented and there is danger of extinction of this knowledge. Thus it is become imperative to collect and document these practices. A semi structured interview schedule was used for the data collection from 10 traditional healers and 120 livestock owners.

Transgenesis refers to the technique involving the manipulation of genes of one organism and deliberate addition into the genome of another organism of same or other species and sometimes specific inhibition of endogenous gene inhibition. Transgenesis promises to solve different problems. The animals produced through the process of transgenesis will serve us various purposes from medicinal to commercial uses. Different methods of producing transgenic animals are available; however, their effectiveness varies with species involved.

The objective of this review is to summarize and compare the work on effects of cooling rates and critical temperature range on post thaw semen quality of different animals. It could be concluded from the present review that optimum freezing protocol for buffalo bull, sheep, pig and stallion is not standardized, so far. However, till to some extent success has been achieved in cattle bulls.

The knowledge and implementation of microRNA expression profiles in disease diagnosis and target gene identification have grown exponentially. MicroRNAs as markers of disease diagnosis and prognosis, and as new therapeutic targets have been substantially explored in human and animals. Several target gene sites have been identified experimentally and some are predicted computationally in some livestock and pet species, and polymorphism at these sites is viewed as a basis for selection.

The unplanned crossbreeding had also threatened the genetic resources base of the country. Although efforts were made at developing breeding program for various livestock species in the country, all did not materialize due to lack of commitment of and consultation with various stakeholders. There is, therefore, a pressing need to develop a breeding strategy that addresses various livestock species and the diverse agro-ecologies that exist in the country.
