In this work, gold nanorods (AuNRs) with well-controlled aspect ratios were prepared using a modified seedgrowth method and covered by TiO2 layers through the hydrothermal reaction to improve stability. Integrating TiO2 with plasmonic rod-like gold nanoparticles could enhance their photo activity by the local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect. AuNRs aspect ratios were controlled by varying the amount of seed solution, reducing agents, surfactant (CTAB), and titanium (IV) but oxide.

One of the easiest and efficient way of water conservation to solve drinking water scarcity is rooftop water harvesting. To evaluate the performance of the first flush with micromesh filter system, inflow and outflow of the rooftop water samples were analysed for pH, EC, TDS, SAL and TSS parameters. In general, the PH, electrical conductivity, and TDS of the roof water samples were within the drinking water standards and the first flush with micromesh filter system was found to reduce TDS values.

Colloidal silver nanoparticles were synthesized by Co-60 ray irradiation of Ag+ in aqueous solution containing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as stabilizer and 0.5 M ethyl alcohol as free radical (OH• ) scavenger. The effect of Ag+ concentration which varied from 1 to 50 mM on the saturated conversion dose (D) of Ag+ into Ag determined by UV-vis spectroscopy and the size of Ag nanoparticles characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were investigated. The dependence of D (kGy) and average size (d, nm) of Ag nanoparticles on Ag+ concentration was found out to be as: D (kGy) = 0.

Fluorescence ratio imaging indicates that immobilized, aspirin-treated platelets, loaded with Fura-2, respond to inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate- (InsP3)-generating agonists such as thrombin by high-frequency, irregular rises in cytosolic [Ca 2+ ] i with spikes that vary in peak level and peak-to-peak interval. This differs from the regular [Ca 2+ ] i oscillations observed inother, larger cells.

The antimitotic depsipeptide dolastatin 15 was radiolabeled with tritium in its amino-terminal dolavaline residue. Dolastatin 15, although potently cytotoxic, is a relatively weak inhibitor oftubulin assembly and does not inhibit the binding ofany other ligand to tubulin. The only methodo-logy found to demonstrate an interaction between the dep-sipeptide and tubulin was Hummel–Dreyer equilibrium chromatography on Sephadex G-50 superfine. The average apparent Kd value obtained in these studies was about 30lM, with no difference observed when column size or tubulin concentration was varied....

Using synchrotron X-ray diffraction the thermal behaviour was studied of the cubic phases in the 1-monooleoyl-rac-glycerol (MO)/n-octyl-b-D-glucopyranoside (OG)/ 2 H2O system with 58 or 45 wt % MO concentration and varying OG/ 2 H2O contents. These MO contents correspond to a Pn3mcubic single-phase or aPn3mcubic phase in excess water on the binary MO/water axis of the ternary phase diagram. The cubic liquid crystalline phases are stable with small fractions of OG, while higher OG concentrations trigger a cubic-to-lamellar phase transition. ...

Amathematicalmodel hasbeendevelopedtostudy theeffect of external tryptophan on the trp operon. The model accounts for the effect of feedback repression by tryptophan through the Hill equation. We demonstrate that the trp operonmaintains an intracellular steady-state concentration in a fivefold range irrespective of extracellular conditions. Dynamic behavior of thetrp operon corresponding to varying levels of extracellular tryptophan illustrates the adaptive nature of regulation.

Fatty acids can stimulate the secretory activity of insulin-producing beta-cells. At elevated concentrations, they can also be toxic to isolated beta-cells. This toxicity varies inversely with the cellular ability to accumulate neutral lipids in the cytoplasm. To further examine whether cytoprotection can be achieved by decreasing cytoplasmic levels of free acyl moieties, we investigated whether palmitate toxicity is also lowered by stimulating its b-oxidation.

This study tests the purported signal amplification capability of the gluta-mine synthetase (GS) regulatory cascade inEscherichia coli. Intracellular concentrations of the pivotal regulatory protein GlnB were modulated by varying expression of its gene (glnB). Neither glnBexpression nor PII * (i.e. the sum of the concentration of the P II-like proteins GlnB and GlnK) had control over the steady-state adenylylation level of GS when cells were grown in the presence of ammonia

Lithium fluoride (LiF) thermoluminescent powder doped with Mg, Cu, Na, and Si as activators was prepared. The dopant concentrations were varied over the wide ranges as follows: Mg (0.05 - 1.0 mol$\%$), Cu (0.01 - 1.0 mol$\%$), Na,Si (0.3 - 2.4 mol$\%$). The results indicated that the Mg and Cu activators are crucial dopants in the LiF:Mg,Cu,Na,Si phosphors. The LiF:Cu,Na,Si samples without Mg exhibit a peak at low temperature in the thermoluminescent glow curve and in the absence of Cu, the LiF:Mg,Na,Si samples exhibit a peak at high temperature.

Most foods contain some folate. The highest concentrations are found in liver, yeast, spinach, other greens, and nuts (100 µg/100 g). The total folate content of an average Western diet is ~250 µg daily, but the amount varies widely according to the type of food eaten and the method of cooking. Folate is easily destroyed by heating, particularly in large volumes of water. Total-body folate in the adult is ~10 mg, the liver containing the largest store. Daily adult requirements are ~100 µg, so stores are only sufficient for 3–4 months in normal adults and severe folate deficiency may...
