In conventional partial resection of parenchymatous organs significant bleeding is one of the main problems, especially in neonates and infants. The patients rapidly lose considerable amounts of their small blood volume. Laser light leads to photo thermal effects in tissue and causes coagulation, drying up, carbonization and evaporization, depending on the temperature.

Ehlers–Danlos syndrome is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of heritable connective tissue disorders caused by a defect in collagen synthesis and structure. The vascular subtype (Ehlers–Danlos syndrome IV) is reported to be associated with a higher incidence of gastrointestinal perforations.

Paragangliomas are rare vascular neuroendocrine tumors that develop in the extra-adrenal paragan‑ glion tissue. They occur most commonly at the carotid bifurcation, where they are known as carotid body tumors. Most paragangliomas are benign, locally aggressive, infltrative tumors.

Previous research has demonstrated that ectopic expression of Ran-binding protein (RanBP) in Arabidopsis results in more axillary buds and reduced apical dominance compared to WT plants. However, the function of RanBP in poplar, which has very typical secondary growth, remains unclear.

This thesis documents a research program in which Australian grown Danshen extracts and related bioactive compounds have been demonstrated to be effective in scavenging free radicals, namely ROS generation, in a cell free system and NADPH oxidase derived superoxide (O2-) generation in vascular tissue (rat aorta). Danshen extracts, both aqueous and ethanol, and their active compounds (Tanshinone IIA, Salvianolic Acid B and Danshensu) demonstrated anti-oxidant activity however findings exhibited stronger activity in a cell free system than in the aortic vascular tissue.
