Ventral hernia

Blunt abdominal trauma is associated with a variety of medical complications. Traumatic abdominal wall hernias (TAWHs) are a rare sequela of blunt trauma. Of the various forms of TAWH, a rare subtype described as a “spontaneous lateral ventral hernia” or flank hernia occurs in less than 1% of all blunt abdominal traumas.

A 3 month-old non-descript male pup was presented to the small animal surgery outpatient unit at madras veterinary college with a history of road traffic accident a day back. Upon presentation the dog was ambulatory, dull, and nonresponsive and exhibited a stiff gait and a hunched posture. On auscultation, muffled heart sounds were observed and dysnea was noticed due to reduction of tidal volume. The mucous membrane was pink and moist and the capillary refill time was less than 2 seconds.

A recumbent HF cow aged 6.5 years weighing about 400 kg presented to the Veterinary College Hospital, Hebbal, Bangalore with a history of huge swelling in the right ventro-caudal lower flank region after falling on a peg 3 days back and it was recently parturited 15 days back. The animal was sedated with Xylazine hydrochloride and the area was desensitized by infiltrating 2% lignocaine hydrochloride. The hernial ring was closed by polyglactin 910 No.2 with simple interrupted suture pattern.
