Vertebrate early embryogenesis is initially directed by a set of maternal RNAs and proteins, yet the mechanisms controlling this program remain largely unknown. Recent transcriptome-wide studies on RNA structure have revealed its pervasive and crucial roles in RNA processing and functions, but whether and how RNA structure regulates the fate of the maternal transcriptome have yet to be determined.

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) are an attractive vertebrate model for the molecular dissection of disease mechanisms. Janus kinase (JAK)/signal transducer and activator of transcription (stat) has been defined through studies of cytokine signaling pathways in mammals.

The zinc-finger cellular nucleic acid binding protein (CNBP) is a strikingly conserved single-stranded nucleic acid binding protein essential for normal forebrain formation during mouse and chick embryogenesis. CNBP cDNAs from a number of vertebrates have been cloned and analysed. CNBP is mainly conformed by seven retroviral Cys-Cys-His-Cys zinc-knuckles and a glycine⁄arginine rich region box.

Signal peptide peptidase (SPP) is an aspartic proteinase that hydrolyses its substrate within the plane of the cellular membrane. In vertebrates, it plays crucial roles in life processes such as differentiation, embryogenesis, cell signaling and immunological response. We first found SPP in plants. An ortholog of human SPP (AtSPP), and its five AtSPP homologs (AtSPPL1– AtSPPL5), were searched for in theArabidopsisdatabase.

Embryogenesis is the process by which the embryo is formed and develops, until it develops into a fetus. It starts with the fertilization of the ovum (or egg) by sperm. The fertilized ovum is referred to as a zygote. The zygote undergoes rapid mitotic divisions with no significant growth (a process known as cleavage) and cellular differentiation, leading to development of an embryo. Although embryogenesis occurs in both animal and plant development, this article addresses the common features among different animals, with some emphasis on the embryonic development of vertebrates and mammals....
