Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP) is known as a leukocytoclastic vasculitis of small vessels, resulting in skin, joint, gastrointestinal (GI) and renal involvement. It is the most common acute vasculitis in children but is relatively uncommon in adults. The pathogenesis of HSP remains unclear, but a wide variety of conditions such as bacterial or viral infections, vaccinations, drugs and other environmental exposures may be responsible for the onset.

Coronary sinus thrombosis (CST) is a rare but life-threatening condition that involves clot formation within the vessel responsible for draining all of the venous blood from the myocardium itself. The coronary sinus is situated in the right atrium approximately half-way between the tricuspid value and the inferior vena cava.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading cause of cancer-related mortality. We previously showed that the inhibition of placental growth factor (PlGF) exerts antitumour effects and induces vessel normalisation, possibly reducing hypoxia. However, the exact mechanism underlying these effects remains unclear.

The inhibition of Delta-like 4 (Dll4)/Notch signaling has been shown to result in excessive, nonfunctional vessel proliferation and significant tumor growth suppression. However, safety concerns emerged with the identification of side effects resulting from chronic Dll4/Notch blockade. Alternatively, we explored the endothelial Dll4 overexpression using different mouse tumor models.

The present investigation was aimed to understand early infection process and plant pathogen interactions involved in tolerance and susceptibility in groundnut challenged with Sclerotium rolfsii by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The histo-pathological changes were recorded at different time intervals in two groundnut genotypes with differential reaction to stem rot disease viz., Cv: “ICGV 86590” (resistant) and Cv: “Narayani” (susceptible). These genotypes were grown in glass house and challenged with stem rot pathogen.

The endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factor (EDHF) response is a critical for the functioning of small blood vessels. We investigated the effect of streptozotocin-induced diabetes on the EDHF response and its possible role in the regulation of cardiac function. The vasorelaxant response to ACh- or NS309- (direct opener endothelial small- (SKCa)- and intermediateconductance (IKCa) calcium-activated potassium channels; main components of EDHF response) were measured in pressurized mesenteric arteries (diameter 300–350 lm). The response to 1 lM ACh was reduced in diabetes (84.8 ± 2.

In-stent restenosis (ISR) occurs due to proliferation and migration of smooth muscle cells from media to intima resulting in re-narrowing of the vessel lumen. This study aims to investigate changes in the three main KCa channels in response to stent implantation in porcine coronary arteries as their expression and function in ISR is yet to be defined. Twenty-eight days after stent implantation, immunofluorescent labelling with anti-desmin and anti-vWF confirm the presence of both endothelial and smooth muscle cells within the neointimal layer.

Exposure to cold causes cutaneous vasoconstriction to reduce body heat loss, while the airway warms up the inspired cold air, thus suggesting that cooling might evoke a response in tracheal smooth muscle different from that in cutaneous blood vessels. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of temperature on isolated rat trachea, with or without electric field stimulation (EFS).

Radiotherapy, although used worldwide for the treatment of head, neck, and oral cancers, causes acute complications, including effects on vasculature and immune response due to cellular stress. Thus, the ability to diagnose side-effects and monitor vascular response in real-time during radiotherapy would be highly beneficial for clinical and research applications.

The mode superposition and full transient methods were used to perform timeehistory analyses, and the displacement at the lower end of the flange was obtained. The effect of the damping ratio on the response of the flange was also evaluated, and the acceleration was obtained. The results of elastic and seismic analyses in this study will be used as basic information to judge whether a flange design meets the acceptance criteria.

Improvement of numerical analysis methods has been required to solve complicated phenomena that occur in nuclear facilities. Particularly, fluid-structure interaction (FSI) behavior should be resolved for accurate design and evaluation of complex reactor vessel internals (RVIs) submerged in coolant. In this study, the FSI effect on dynamic characteristics of RVIs in a typical 1,000 MWe nuclear power plant was investigated.

In this system, the flow is driven by the pressure difference between a gas storage tank and a vacuum vessel with a source pressure. The idea is based on a constant volume system without extra source gases to guarantee rapid response and high throughput. Among them, valves and gas species are studied because their properties could influence the velocity of the fluid field.

Aging is a main risk factor for development of cardiovascular diseases associated with the impairment of endothelial function in both sexes. In the present study, age-related changes in vascular responsiveness, epigenetic modifications of vessel wall, and blood biomarkers related to endothelial functions were examined in an age- and sex-dependent manner.

Chapter 28 - The circulatory system. The circulatory system consists of the heart and blood vessels. It is responsible for sending blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen and to the digestive system to pick up nutrients in order to deliver oxygen and nutrients to all the organ systems in the body. This system also circulates waste products to certain organ systems so that these wastes can be removed fromthe blood. This chapter discusses the lymphatic system because it also circulates fluids throughout the body.

In the 16th century, Leonardo da Vinci had described “The narrowing of the passage of blood vessels, thickening of the coats of these vessels and hardening of arteries”. This is the first documentation of atherosclerosis, but today our understanding of atherogenesis as a process of a chronic inflammatory disease has been updated by many mechanisms such as hypercholesterolemia, dysfunction of endothelial cells, oxidation of lipoproteins and espe‐ cially oxidative stress. In particular, the endothelium is responsible for the...

In recent years the marine transportation system has come under increasing attention. Among the concerns are its safety and efficiency, prevention of and response to ship-caused pollution, and the use of vessels for inimical purposes, ranging from simple lawbreaking (such as smuggling) to serving as a vehicle or target for terrorist acts. Over the past two decades, automatic identification systems (AIS) have been developed in response to these concerns, and much work has been done to define AIS technical and communication requirements.
