Ebook "DNA replication: From old principles to new discoveries" eviews the latest trends and future directions of DNA replication research. The contents reflect upon the principles that have been established through the genetic and enzymatic studies of bacterial, viral, and cellular replication during the past decades. The book begins with a historical overview of the studies on eukaryotic DNA replication by Professor Thomas Kelly, a pioneer of the field.

A novel goose-origin astrovirus (GoAstV) has broken out across China in recent years, causing gout in goslings with a mortality rate of around 50%. However, our understanding of the dynamic distribution, tissue tropism and pathogenesis of GoAstV is incomplete. In order to assess its pathogenicity, one-day-old goslings were inoculated separately with GoAstV via oral and subcutaneous injection routes.

Neonatal diarrhea remains one of the main causes of morbi-mortality in dairy calves under artificial rearing. It is often caused by infectious agents of viral, bacterial, or parasitic origin. Cows vaccination and colostrum intake by calves during the first 6 h of life are critical strategies to prevent severe diarrhea but these are still insufficient.

Vaccination has transformed public health, most notably including the eradication of smallpox. Despite its profound historical importance, little is known of the origins and diversity of the viruses used in smallpox vaccination. Prior to the twentieth century, the method, source and origin of smallpox vaccinations remained unstandardised and opaque. We reconstruct and analyse viral vaccine genomes associated with smallpox vaccination from historical artefacts.

In chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) several diseases are caused from fungal, bacterial and viral origin. Among the fungal diseases, damping off caused by species of Pythium is very common in the nursery which causes about 90 per cent mortality in nurseries and fields. Present experiment was carried out in in-vitro and in-situ conditions at Department of Plant Pathology, SHUATS in Completely Randomized Design with eight treatments and three replications each.

Acute bronchitis is one of the most prevalent respiratory infections in primary care, and in more than 90% of the cases antibiotics are prescribed, mainly when purulent expectoration is present. However, this process is usually viral in origin and the benefits of antibiotic treatment are marginal.

A computer virus propagation model with feedback controls is first proposed and investigated. We show that the control variables do not influence on the global stability of the original differential model, they only alter the position of the unique viral equilibrium. The mathematical analyses and numerical simulations show that this equilibrium can be completely eliminated, namely, moved to the origin of coordinates if suitable values of the control variables are chosen. In the other words, the control variables are effective in the prevention of viruses in computer systems.

In this study, stool samples from cases of diarrhoea patients’ ≤ 2 years of age were tested to detect the Rotavirus antigen in the stool specimen by immuno-chromatography test with an aim to know the cause of diarrhoea. If it is of viral origin, unnecessary administration of antibiotics can be prevented and thus help in right and proper management of the patient.

Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) is one of the world’s most important cash crop cultivated in more than 80 countries around the globe. There are several impediments which contribute to low cane yield and one of the factors is plant diseases. The crop is mostly constrained by diseases of fungal, bacterial and viral origin. Bacterial Red stripe/top rot incited by Acidovorax avenae subsp. Avenae once considered to be the minor disease is gaining importance these days. The disease mostly occurs in two forms i.e.

Intensification in aquaculture practices has resulted the development of various diseases caused due to pathogens and water quality issues. In recent times, the usage of antibiotics for controlling bacterial diseases in aquaculture has been proven unsustainable and barren due to development of antibiotic resistance in pathogens one of the greatest human health challenges of the 21st century. Many measures have been used as potential alternatives to antibiotics including organic and inorganic acids, antibodies, probiotics and herbal products.

Last few decades have been momentous in the history of human and animal health because a series of new infectious zoonotic viruses were reported and researched across the globe. More than 70% of the emerging zoonoses reported in the last decade had viral etiology and originated in wild life. Changing face of zoonotic viruses poses threat to public health and economy. The risk factors precipitating the occurrence of emerging viruses are many; and they are in a state of continuous evolution.

Excessive and inappropriate antimicrobial use in the community is one risk factor that can result in the spread of antimicrobial resistance. Upper respiratory tract infections are most frequently reported among children and mainly of viral origin and do not require antibiotics.
