Virulence and antibiotic susceptibility

This study was aimed to investigate the intestinal microbiota in racing pigeons with regard to Enterococcus species distribution, virulence factors and antibiotic susceptibility. Three methods (API, Multiplex sodA-PCR, 16S rRNA sequencing) were compared for Enterococcus species identification. Cloacal samples from 179 apparently healthy pigeons of 13 different flocks were tested.

This study was conducted to characterize virulence genes of Escherichia coli isolates from tuna loins and flakes produced in Côte d’Ivoire. In total, 460 Escherichia coli isolates were analyzed for the presence of diarrhea-associated genes (eae, stx, AggR, elt, and est) by multiplex PCR using specific primers and for their susceptibility to 10 different antimicrobials according to the disk diffusion susceptibility test.

Listeria monocytogenes is an emerging foodborne pathogen of public health concern. Animals may act an asymptomatic carrier and can contaminate foods of animal origin such as meats and dairy products. The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence, pathogenicity and antimicrobial profile of L. monocytogenes in goats and pigs intended for human consumption. A total of 350 samples comprising meat, milk, blood, and faeces of goats and pigs were analysed.

This work was aimed at isolating AHL degrading bacteria from fish culture pond soil, with abilities appropriate for use as probiotic in aquaculture. The presence of an autoinducer inactivation (aiiA) homologue gene and AHL-inactivation assay showed that BacillusthuringiensisQQ17, which was one among the 20 isolates, could rapidly degrade synthetic C6-HSL in vitro and hampered violacein production by Chromobacterium violaceum.

Staphylococcus aureus is a virulent pathogen in humans capable of surviving in the otherwise sterile bloodstream and causing a serious and life threatening bacteremia with high morbidity and mortality. Presence in the blood increases its chances of metastasis and the risk of fatality. The choice of antibiotic therapy has conventionally relied to a large extent on the susceptibility of the pathogen to methicillin.
