Warming blanket

Forced-air warming (FAW) is an effective method of preventing inadvertent perioperative hypothermia (IPH). However, its warming effects can be influenced by the style and position of the FAW blanket. This study aimed to compare the effects of underbody FAW blankets being placed under or over patients in preventing IPH.

Underbody blankets have recently been launched and are used by anesthesiologists for surgical patients. However, the forced-air warming effect of underbody blankets is still controversial. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of forced-air warming by an underbody blanket on body temperature in anesthetized patients.

Management of a patient’s body temperature is an important aspect of care that should be addressed by targeted temperature management (TTM). Often, non-invasive methods like forced-air blankets are used. Especially in the operating room this management may be a subsidiary and repetitive task requiring constant observation of the patient’s body temperature and adaption using the limited set of available settings.

This study explored the comparison of the thermal insulation effect of incubator to infusion thermometer in laparoscopic hysterectomy. Methods: We assigned 75 patients enrolled in the study randomly to three groups: Group A: Used warming blanket; group B: Used warming blanket and infusion thermometer; group C: Used warming blanket and incubator. The nasopharyngeal temperature at different time points during the operation served as the primary outcome.

The attendant “green house effect” is one of the most frightening environmental problems of our time. Ozone layers that serve as blanket for regulating the earth’s temperature are stripped as a resulting of gas flaring thereby causing global warming (Ikelegbe, 1993). In spite of advances in technology and the potential to convert the flared gas into a source of enormous nation revenue, the practices has continued in Nigeria, ostensibly underscoring the problems of our national development (Oyekunle, 1999; Akpan, 2009).

The earth’s atmosphere is made up of a delicately balanced layer of ‘greenhouse gases’. This layer acts like a blanket, trapping enough heat to sustain life. Humans are burning huge amounts of fossil fuels – adding more and more greenhouse gases to the atmosphere and making this blanket thicker. This traps more and more heat, warming the globe and throwing our climate into chaos. Climate change is already underway. The most recent (2007) report of the world’s most authoritative body of climate scientists, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)1, confi rmed that:2...
