Water-logged condition

Mangrove forests are saline or brackish wetland environments, in which substrateusually anoxic due to waterlogging. This unique condition induces a high ability of this ecosystem in fixing and storing CO2, one of the greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming.

Anaerobic germination is one of the most important traits for rice under direct-seeded conditions. The trait reduces risk of crop failure due to waterlogged conditions after seeding and allows water to be used as a means of weed control.

The study showed that E. ferox tended to have highest tissue concentrations of N and P in the leaf parts while the less soluble Fe, Mn and intermediately soluble Zn exhibited greater concentrations in roots than in shoots. Thus, E. ferox can also be proved to be a better option as an alternative crop to include it in cropping system mode under field condition to replenish the exhausted nutrients such as N, P and Zn by the cultivation of other cereal crops.

Most common reason for the waterlogging problem in the agricultural field is absence of an adequate drainage system. The sustainability of farm operations are highly vulnerable due to fluctuations in rainfall. Thus, the estimation of drainage design layout and identification of the vulnerable area for waterlogging are the most vital operations for achieving maximum yield of paddy inland. In this study, the Cypress creek formula‘s used for estimating discharge of each plot.

The mungbean is one of the most important pulse crop cultivated in India, despite variation in salinity, temperature, and waterlogging conditions in different agro-climatic zones. Bacterial endophytes are endosymbiotic in nature and employ advantageous effects on host plant. In the present study, a total 41 endophytes were isolated from Mungbean nodule from the field during summer and kharif season. Among all isolates, 46% of the isolates were tolerating temperature up to 450C while and 19% could tolerate salinity up to 5% NaCl concentration.

Water-logging is one of the major abiotic stress that severely limits onion productivity world-wide. In onion, bulb size and yield are the economically important parameters that are getting seriously hampered due to frequent flooding events during Kharif season. An experiment was conducted under artificial waterlogging condition to identify the most sensitive growth stage for water logging stress in onion variety Bhima Super during Kharif 2017. The 45 days old seedlings were transplanted in plastic pots and the entire growth period of onion crop was divided into 11 different growth phases.

The first experiment was set up in a field of 500 m2 to determine the productivity and nutritional value of Hymenachne acutigluma and Paspalum atratum grasses planted on waterlogged soil. Results showed that two kinds of grasses were similar in biomass and nutritive values. The second experiment was conducted in an 800 m2 area, Paspalum grass was planted at different spacings in wet land of approximately 20 cm in depth. No significant differences were found on grass fresh and dry yield. The third study was carried out in dairy farms of Soctrang province for 64 days.

Maize is highly productive crop if it is grown under optimal environmental and management conditions. Waterlogging, caused by contingent flooding, continuous rainfall and inadequate drainage or a high water table, is one of the most important constraints for maize production in Asia and many other parts of the world.

The treated industrial wastewater has been, continuously used for crop production in the water scares region of our country. Irrigation with agro-based industrial wastewater (treated paper mill effluent) though it initially increased the yield of many crops, over a period; it deteriorates the soil quality by addition of soluble salts in soil profile results in deflocculating of soil structure, reduced infiltration and waterlogging leads to yield reduction in some crops under poor management condition.

The young alluvial soils show little profile development although they are sometimes stratified. With the exception of about 800 ha of sand to loamy sand soils in one area, textures vary from sandy loam to uniform clay, with the finer textures tending to occur toward the mangrove and in the flood-prone area between the Meme and Mokoko Rivers. Although there is evidence of flooding and seasonal waterlogging from several other rivers that traverse the plain, these soils rarely show evidence of strongly reducing conditions within 1.5 m of the surface.
