Weed management in vegetable crops

The present investigation was undertaken to evaluate the effect of integrated weed management practices on weeds as well as crop growth and yield parameters in brinjal cv. BH-6747 during 2012-13 at vegetable research farm, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. The field experiment comprised of various chemicals (weedicides) and mulch.

A field experiment was conducted during 2016 and 2017 at the Regional Centre of Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Tuber Crops Research Institute, Bhubaneswar, Odisha to study the effect of climate on weed management practices in elephant foot yam [Amorphophallus paeoniifolius (Dennst.) Nicolson]. Higher average monthly maximum temperature was noticed during early crop growth period (vegetative phase) in 2017 compared to 2016.

An experiment was conducted at the farmer field village- Majitha, District- Jabalpur during the rabi season of 2016-17 and 2017-18. A field experiment was conducted during winter season to find out the biomass production and carbon storage by weeds, wheat crop and tree under eucalyptus based agroforestry system in randomized block design with three replications. The result revealed that the weed management practices increase the crop biomass production and reduce the weeds biomass. The biomass production was higher in agroforestry system than crop alone or tree alone.

Weed is a plant growing where it is not desired so weeds are ubiquitous. The vegetable fields are usually infested by a wide spectrum of broad and grassy weeds. Weeds compete with the crops for water, soil, nutrients, light, space and crop yields are significantly reduced as reported by several studies. The vegetable as well as agricultural crops are infested with a variety of weeds. Out of over 800 weeds documented in India, 80 are considered as serious and nearly 200 as major weeds. They also harbour many insect-pests and microorganisms.

The Present study was carried out at Bharatpur district of Eastern Rajasthan during 2015- 16, 2016-17 and 2017-18. Potato is one of the most important vegetable crops of the country. The development of the Agriculture is primarily depends on the application of the scientific technologies by making the best use of available resources. One of the major constraints of traditional potato farming is low productivity due to non management of weeds. To increase the production, productivity and quality of agricultural produce, on farm testing are being conducted at various farmers’ field.

Vegetable pea (Pisum sativum spp. Hortense L.) is an important pulse crop. In the present investigation, afield experiment was laid out in randomized block design in three replication Variety - Azad Pea-3, keeping pre-emergence application of pendimethalin (stamp extra 38.7%) @ 0.75 kg a.i./ha, stale seed bed glyphosate @1.00 kg a.i./ha, mulching and hand weeding in plot. This field experiment was carried out at Kalayanpur, Kanpur during Rabi season 2014-15 and laboratory test were also conducted. Data display that the weed free check method treatment yielded.

Onion Allium cepa L. (2n=16) is the most important bulbous vegetable. It forms an indispensable part of many diets, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. Onion is regarded as an important export oriented crop and fetches a handsome foreign exchange. Onion among vegetables has very poor competitive ability with weeds due to its inherent characteristics such as shallow root system, narrow leaf and less area. The reduction in crop yield has direct correlation with weed competition. The effective weed control involves identification of weed flora and their management through suitable methods.

Weed flora of winter and spring small grain crops (wheat, barley, oats, and rye) was surveyed in lowland and mountainous areas of the central part of Serbia, which are dissimilar in environmental conditions, primarily climate and soil characteristics, and crop management practices.
