Ebook "Practical problems in soil mechanics and foundation engineering - Volume 2" discusses the problems of weed control in sugarcane against the background of world-wide cultivation, with emphasis on Taiwan's intensive pattern of crop farming. After a brief botanical description of sugarcane and its cultivation in relation to weed control, the weeds themselves are studied. Chemical control of weeds, problems of crop tolerance and responses of weed species to chemicals are examined.

Worldwide feralization of crop species into agricultural weeds threatens global food security. Weedy rice is a feral form of rice that infests paddies worldwide and aggressively outcompetes cultivated varieties. Despite increasing attention in recent years, a comprehensive understanding of the origins of weedy crop relatives and how a universal feralization process acts at the genomic and molecular level to allow the rapid adaptation to weediness are still yet to be explored.

This study was conducted to provide data on the weed species composition of the Cyperaceae and Poaceae in the rice fields in An Giang province. The study results show that the weed species composition of Cyperaceae and Poaceae families is very diverse with 38 species belonging to 25 genera, of which 27 are usable. The largest number of species is in crop 1 and in the fields inside the ring dike.

The Far Eastern weed Artemisia verlotiorum was formerly reported from Lebanon. However, for a number of reasons this record was questionable. In 2019, the genuine presence of this species was confirmed based on macromorphology and strengthened by assessing the somatic nuclear DNA content (genome size or 2C-value) of the Lebanese populations.

Genetic diversity within a species reflects population evolution, ecology, and ability to adapt. Genome-wide population surveys of both natural and introduced populations provide insights into genetic diversity, the evolutionary processes and the genetic basis underlying local adaptation. Grass carp is the most important freshwater foodfish species for food and water weed control.

Spiroplasma citri comprises a bacterial complex that cause diseases in citrus, horseradish, carrot, sesame, and also infects a wide array of ornamental and weed species. S. citri is transmitted in a persistent propagative manner by the beet leafhopper, Neoaliturus tenellus in North America and Circulifer haematoceps in the Mediterranean region.

This study reports on glyphosate resistant (GR) weeds and their resistance mechanisms based on global scientifically reported cases. Forty-nine different weed species have evolved resistance to glyphosate in 29 countries with a total of 318 identified cases worldwide. Fifty percent of these resistance cases were found in glyphosate-resistant cropping systems.

Little is known about the phytotoxic effects of essential oils from Pine species, GC and GC/MS analysis of Pinus radiata D. Don essential oil obtained from needles, resulted in the identification of 49 components comprising 97.6 % of the oil totality. The composition was l dominated by monoterpene hydrocarbons (86.4 %) with β-pinene (40.2 %), limonene (25.5 %) and α-pinene (15.2 %) were the major compounds.

This study was taken to know the weed control efficiency of herbicides in chickpea intercropping with lentil. The weed competition was highest during 30 DAS and the maximum weed density was found in 60 and 90 DAS. Weed species were recorded such as broadleaf weeds like Coronopus didymus, Chenopodium album, Melilotus officinalis, Phalaris minor, etc. The main focus of this experiment was to study dry matter accumulation by weeds at different days after sowing (30, 60, 90, and 120).

This infection is observed during October month in these volunteer plants continuously for the two years (2019 & 2020). The population of the vector whitefly is also observed in the Malvastrum coromandelianum and Sida acuta, this may facilitate for the transmission of the virus and Eventhough, with vector population, these species alone being observed with infection with this specific virus remaining weeds are not infected hence this may be host specific. Hence Malvastrum coromandelianum is documented as highly susceptible to this specific virus and needs research on infecting to the crops.

The field study was conducted to investigate weed flora diversity in rice crop during kharif season of 2020-21 in four development blocks viz. Naraini, Mahua, Badokhar Khurd and Baberu of Banda District in Uttar Pradesh State. This study identified and quantified the floristic composition of weeds in four different blocks. The number of monocot species recorded in the study was 13 (68 %), while the number of dicot species was 6 (32%). Out of 19 weed species 9 were annual...

During surveying and collecting of predatory ladybird beetle species in Da Lat city, we recorded that Oenopia kirbyi commonly appeared on aphid-infected plants and weeds, but until now there have been almost no detailed studies on this species. With the hope of contributing to research on the use of predatory ladybird beetles in pest control, we studied the morphological and biological characteristics of Oenopia kirbyi in Da Lat city.

The study highlights species E. citriodora found to be more promising for weed control and subsequently selected using different concentrations for the second experiment. Bioassay of E. citriodora oil at 5 ppm concentration was found to be more effective for weed suppression than aqueous extract concentrations. The study suggests an eco-friendly method to suppress the weed population and effective management in weed control.

Rice is an important food crop extensively grown in India. Several factors are responsible for reducing the yield of transplant rice. However, weed infestation is the major threat to productivity of transplanted rice. Normally the loss in yield ranges between 16-20%, yet in severe cases the yield losses can be more than 50%, depending upon the species and intensity of weeds.

Review study showed that CTPTR-CTW and ZTDSR-ZTW (RRRW) record the highest seed bank (SB) of grasses, sedges and BLWs as total weeds, in general; and predominant weeds i.e., Echinochloa spp., Ammania baccifera, Commelina benghalensis and Digitaria sanguinalis, in particular. It also showed the higher species richness (DMg) and Shannon–Weaver (H’) indices. CTDSRCTW and CTDSR-ZTW (RRR) show the lowest WSB and at par with Shannon–Weaver (H’) index; further, lowest species richness (DMg) under CTDSR-CTW.

A field experiment was conducted at the Livestock Farm, JNKVV, Jabalpur during Rabi season 2017 and 2018 to check the bio-efficacy of pendimethalin (38.7% CS) as PPI against complex weed flora in chickpea. Species wise weed data were recorded in weedy check plots revealed that Medicago denticullate (62.08%) and Cichorium intybus (32.85%) were most dominant. However, other monocot weeds like Cyperus rotundus (3.12%), Cynodon dactylon (1.95%) were also present in less numbers in chickpea.
