Synthetic hexaploid wheat (SHW) is a reconstitution of hexaploid wheat from its progenitors (Triticum turgidum ssp. durum L.; AABB x Aegilops tauschii Coss.; DD) and has novel sources of genetic diversity for broadening the genetic base of elite bread wheat (BW) germplasm (T. aestivum L). Understanding the diversity and population structure of SHWs will facilitate their use in wheat breeding programs.

Combining ability analysis for yield and its component under late sown condition in bread wheat involved ten diverse parents and their 45 F1s and their F2s indicated significance differences among the parents for gca and crosses for sca for all characters under studied. The GCA and SCA components of variances in both generations showed significant for all traits indicating additive and non additive gene action controlled the pattern of inheritance for the concern traits over the both generations.

A set of 45 polymorphic microsatellite markers, representing markers for almost each chromosome, was used for the assessment of genetic diversity in 35 genotypes of bread wheat. A total of 127 alleles were detected which ranged from 2 to 6 with an average allele number of 2.82 per locus. The PIC value of the 45 SSRs ranged from 0.08 to 0.50 with an average PIC of 0.30. Resolving power and Marker index of all 45 markers varied from 0.17 to 2.82 and 0.16 to 1.52, respectively.

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), a staple food crop is of great commercial importance. Its production is restricted due to various abiotic stresses. There are indications that the wheat production is consistently limited by terminal heat stress. Here, performance of forty genotypes of wheat was undertaken for assessment of direct selection parameters (variability, heritability and genetic advance) and their relation with heat tolerance.

Field experiment was conducted during Rabi season of 2010-11 and 2011-12 at Research farm of CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, India to study agrometeorological indices on phenology and yield of wheat cultivars as influenced by Late, very late sown heat stress condition. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with two sowing time viz., late (16th Dec.) and very late (5th Jan.) in main plot and four late sown genotypes (PBW 373, WH 1021, PBW 590 and PBW 550) in sub plots with three replications.

In India, wheat is cultivated on around 29.8 mha that produces 92.5 mt with an average productivity of 3.1 t/ha. But in recent scenario of climate change our wheat cultivars succumb to the grave problem of terminal heat stress leading to substantial reduction in its production and productivity. Sixteen genotypes of wheat were used for assessing the molecular diversity for terminal heat stress tolerance against 14 SSR markers linked to the trait of interest. Results revealed that amplified alleles ranged from185 bp to 230 bp.

A field study was conducted with an objective to assess diurnal variations in photosynthetic pigments and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters in two stay green wheat genotypes viz. DL 1266- 1 and Arina 166 to gain insight into photoprotective regulation mediated by photosynthetic pigments during grain filling under late sown heat stress condition. Heat stress was imposed by delaying sowing date i.e. 12th January. Diurnal alterations in temperature affected all the parameters associated with photosynthetic pigments and chlorophyll fluorescence.

Inter Simple Sequence Repeats, the PCR based technique was used to reveal the genetic diversity among wheat and its wild relatives. DNA profiling of 27 wheat genotypes at all the existing ploidy levels (diploid, tetraploid and hexaploid) was done using ISSR primers. All the primers were polymorphic. The primers resulted in the amplification of 73 bands out of which 17 bands were unique. Unique bands resulted in case of all the primers. According to these 4 ISSR primers genetic similarity value was observed ranging from 0 to 1, the highest genetic similarity value (1.

Wheat is qualitatively a vital source of macromolecule, energy and fiber for human nutrition since decades hence, used as a staple food grain for community and as well a major source of fodder for animal feeding. Assessment of genetic diversity using molecular markers is used for characterization of different genotypes with reliable and authentic results. RAPD is a PCR based molecular technique for identification of genetic variability in similar genotypes. It usually preferred for the initiation of this kind of work as this technique is simple, versatile and relatively inexpensive.

In order to investigate the relationships among the drought tolerance/resistance indices an experiment was conducted in alpha lattice design with two replications under two moisture regimes during the crop season 2015-16. Thirteen indices, which were most frequently used in plant breeding, were compared based on grain yield of 20 durum wheat genotypes. Highly significant differences for yield (Yp and Ys) and all drought tolerance indices except TOL were observed which indicated that genotypes were differing for genes controlling yield and drought tolerance indices.

The same genotypes were also assessed in field conditions for structural analyses, which were carried out based on eight yield components. The dendrogram created was comparatively analyzed with the RAPD dendrogram. There were differences between genetic and phenotypic similarity of the studied accessions.

This study showed that drought stress reduced the yield of some genotypes, while others were tolerant to drought, suggesting genetic variability of drought tolerance in this material. Therefore, breeders can select stress-resistant wheat genotypes based on the MP, GMP, and STI indices.
