Wheat genotypes for terminal heat tolerance

A study was conducted at Wheat Breeding section, RPCAU, Pusa, Samastipur, Bihar during rabi 2016-17 to evaluate the genotypes of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) for terminal heat tolerance. Observations were recorded on plant height, number of tillers per plant, flag leaf area, days to fifty per cent flowering, canopy temperature, relative water content, spike length, number of grains per spike, spike fertility, chlorophyll content, days to maturity, thousand grain weight, harvest index, yield per plant, thousand grain weight susceptibility index and heat susceptibility index.

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), a staple food crop is of great commercial importance. Its production is restricted due to various abiotic stresses. There are indications that the wheat production is consistently limited by terminal heat stress. Here, performance of forty genotypes of wheat was undertaken for assessment of direct selection parameters (variability, heritability and genetic advance) and their relation with heat tolerance.

In India, wheat is cultivated on around 29.8 mha that produces 92.5 mt with an average productivity of 3.1 t/ha. But in recent scenario of climate change our wheat cultivars succumb to the grave problem of terminal heat stress leading to substantial reduction in its production and productivity. Sixteen genotypes of wheat were used for assessing the molecular diversity for terminal heat stress tolerance against 14 SSR markers linked to the trait of interest. Results revealed that amplified alleles ranged from185 bp to 230 bp.

Wheat is self-pollinated annual temperate crop extensively grown as staple food in the world. Thirteen genetically diverse heat tolerance wheat varieties viz.HD3091, DBW90, UP2843, WH1124, HPW211, WH1021, CBW12, MASC6272, JOB666, HD2329, WAXWING, HD2891, HD2961, and three tester HD2967, WH1105, HD3059 was crossed in line x tester mating design excluding reciprocals.
