Molecular characterization is important for efficient utilization of germplasm and development of improved varieties. In the present study, we investigated the genetic purity, relatedness and population structure of 265 maize inbred lines from the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR), the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT) and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) using 220,878 single nucleotide polymorphic (SNP) markers obtained using genotyping by sequencing (GBS).

Synthetic hexaploid wheat (SHW) is a reconstitution of hexaploid wheat from its progenitors (Triticum turgidum ssp. durum L.; AABB x Aegilops tauschii Coss.; DD) and has novel sources of genetic diversity for broadening the genetic base of elite bread wheat (BW) germplasm (T. aestivum L). Understanding the diversity and population structure of SHWs will facilitate their use in wheat breeding programs.

The tetraploid durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. ssp. durum Desf. Husnot) is an important crop which provides the raw material for pasta production and a valuable source of genetic diversity for breeding hexaploid wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Future breeding efforts to enhance yield potential and climate resilience will increasingly rely on genomics-based approaches to identify and select beneficial alleles.

One of the main goals of the plant breeding in the twenty-first century is the development of crop cultivars that can maintain current yields in unfavorable environments. Landraces that have been grown under varying local conditions include genetic diversity that will be essential to achieve this objective.

Stripe rust (yellow rust) is a significant disease for bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) worldwide. A genome-wide association study was conducted on 240 Chinese wheat cultivars and elite lines genotyped with the wheat 90 K single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) arrays to decipher the genetic architecture of stripe rust resistance in Chinese germplasm.

Appropriate information about genetic diversity and population structure of germplasm improves the efficiency of plant breeding. The low productivity of Nepali bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is a major concern particularly since Nepal is ranked the 4th most vulnerable nation globally to climate change.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is the foremost important food crop in the world especially in Asiatic Continent. It is ranking second to the wheat among the most cultivated cereals in the world. Rice has widest germplasm collection than other cereal crops. It has to be made productive through several achievements in rice breeding programme, especially in sustainable food grain production with quality concern and it is undoubtedly the most important cereal of the world providing 21 per cent of global human per capita energy and 15 per cent of per capita protein.

Stem rust is one of the most prevailing diseases of wheat crop severely affecting yield. The disease constrains wheat production and henceforth lags the demand. Identifying genes providing resistance from stem rust has been quite important in present scenario. One such gene providing resistance to stem rust is Sr2 which has provided durable, broad-spectrum, adult plant resistance and has been used as a potential control measure against wheat stem rust in modern wheat breeding programs worldwide.

Laboratory experiments were carried out to study the biology of Sitophilus oryzae on four different wheat germplasms such as (DPW-62150, DBW-39, GW-322, and K-0307). It was found that the different developmental stages of rice weevil were longer during the winter season as compared to the summer season. As lowest incubation period of 3±0.47 days was recorded from DPW-62150 while the longest one from DBW-39 with 5.44±0.42 days.

Genetic diversity and the association of the target traits with other traits are the foundation for any crop improvement programme. 308 genotypes of spring wheat reference set (SWRS) were evaluated in simple lattice during crop-season 2015-16 to study genetic diversity and, character association. Phenotypic data were recorded on 15 nutrients and grain yield traits. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among all the genotypes.

Fifty germplasm of bread wheat used to study the nature and magnitude of genetic divergence using Mahalanobis’s D2 statistics. The data for twelve important quantitative traits recorded from the genotypes raised in Randomized Block Design having three replications. The fifty genotypes were grouped into eight clusters. Cluster I was largest with fourteen genotypes followed by cluster IV with ten genotypes.

Bread wheat is most cultivated cereal used as food over 95% of the population. Twenty wheat genotypes were assayed to study the genetic diversity using molecular markers. The seventy-five alleles were identified with a mean of 2.34 alleles per locus using 32 SSR markers. Majority of SSR markers showed a high level of polymorphism. PIC values ranged from 0.05 (WMS-169) to 0.75 (CWM-107), with an average of 0.38 per primer. The RP value of primer ranges from 0.92 (WMC-177) to 1.94 (WMS-169) with an average value of 1.51, which explains the ability of primers to resolve the studied germplasm.

Wheat is the most important cereal grain crop in the world and is an important dietary nutritional source. High genetic variability is the prerequisite for the genetic improvement of traits. Yield and yield components can be increased by studying the diversity between genotypes and successfully utilizing them in selection and hybridization program. Fifteen wheat germplasm were taken in this study and evaluated for genetic diversity analysis.
