White stem borer

The relative resistance or susceptibility of nearly 215 rice genotypes supplied by Indian Institute of Rice Research, Hyderabad was screened to identify the resistant genotype against rice yellow stem borer. The trial was conducted following augmented block design with two checks i.e., local check (BPT 5204) and susceptible check (TN1) for a period of two successive kharif seasons (2016 & 2017). The per cent incidence of stem borer was recorded at their peak infestation of dead hearts at tillering stage and white ears at reproductive stage.

Field experiment was conducted at Crop Research Station, Narendra Deva University of Agriculture and Technology, Kumarganj, Faizabad, Uttar Pradeshto evaluate new molecules of insecticides, viz., Fipronil 5%SC, Imidacloprid 17.8%SL, Chlorantaniliprole 0.4G, Cartap hydrochloride 50% SP, Carbofuran 3G, Monocrotophos 36%SL and Carbosulfan 6G against yellow stem borer, Scirpophaga incertulas infesting rice during kharif, 2015-16.

In order to understand seasonal incidence, crop loss estimation and management of yellow stem borer Scirpophaga incertulas (walker) on paddy, studies were conducted during 2015 at ZAHRS, College of Agriculture, Shivamogga. The highest incidence of dead heart and white ear was noticed during third week of April and third week of May.

Field studies on the effect of organic and inorganic sources of silicon against yellow stem borer in rice revealed the superiority of calcium silicate at 2t/ha and diatomaceous earth at 0.45t/ha in arresting stem borer damage with a record of average 5.84 – 11.97 % dead heart (DH) and 2.56 – 8.84% white ear head (WEH) as against 14.75 – 21.34 % DH and 8.35-14.93% WEH in control. At vegetative and heading stages both the treatments resulted in up to 60% and 69% decline in borer damage.

The present investigation was conducted on submergence rice variety Swarna sub-1 to study the effect of environmental factors on the incidence of yellow stem borer, Scirpophaga incertulas (Walker) during Kharif season of 2016 and 2017 at Agricultural Research Farm, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. The infestation of yellow stem borer was noticed in the field from 2nd week of July to 4th week of October during both Kharif season of 2016 and 2017.

The bio-efficacy of bio-agents viz., Beauveria bassiana 2% A.S. @ 10ml/lit, Bacillus subtilis @ 10/lit and azadirachtin 1% EC @ 1ml/lit and chemical insecticide viz., chlorpyriphos 20 EC @ 3ml/lit, chlorantraniliprole 20 SC @ 0.5ml/lit and fipronil 40% + imidacloprid 40% WG @ 0.5g/lit were assessed against coffee white stem borer Xylotrechus quadripes (Chevrolat, 1863) (Cerambycidae: Coleoptera) in lower Pulney hills, Tamil Nadu.
