Host plant resistance has been proposed as one of the most promising approaches in whitefly management. Already in 1995 two quantitative trait loci (Tv-1 and Tv-2) originating from S. habrochaites CGN1.1561 were identified that reduced the oviposition rate of the greenhouse whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum).

Sweetpotato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci MED/Q and MEAM1/B, are two economically important invasive species that cause considerable damages to agriculture crops through direct feeding and indirect vectoring of plant pathogens. Recently, a draft genome of B. tabaci MED/Q has been assembled. In this study, we focus on the genomic comparison between MED/Q and MEAM1/B, with a special interest in MED/Q’s genomic signatures that may contribute to the highly invasive nature of this emerging insect pest.

Blackgram (Vigna mungo) is a major pulse crop grown in Tamil Nadu and leaf crinkle virus is an important disease that infects the crops at various stages of its growth, which reduce the yield drastically. There are conflicting reports on the transmission of ULCV by insects that includes aphids, leafhopper, whitefly and beetle. Hence, a study was carried out to identify the putative vectors involved in the transmission of the disease. Found that the virus was effectively transmitted by aphid vector, Aphis craccivora in a non-persistent manner and whitefly (Bemisia tabaci).

Begomoviruses being the largest genera of Geminiviridae cause significant economical losses in a wide variety of crops in several tropical and subtropical regions of India and a major threats to food security. Begomoviruses are transmitted by the whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) in a circulative persistent manner. Begomoviruses as of their small genomes (ssDNA) and limited coding capacities, rely heavily on host machineries for infection. They interact with a wide range of plant proteins and process them to support viral DNA replication, gene expression, movement, and to neutralize host defenses.
