Migraine is a common heritable neurovascular disorder typically characterised by episodic attacks of severe pulsating headache and nausea, often accompanied by visual, auditory or other sensory symptoms. Although genome-wide association studies have identified over 40 single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with migraine, there remains uncertainty about the casual genes involved in disease pathogenesis and how their function is regulated.

A 6 month old Labrador pup was presented to the Critical Care Unit of Madras Veterinary College Teaching Hospital with the history of anorexia, vomiting and diarrhea for two days. Clinical examination revealed poor hair coat, blanched mucous membranes and hemorrhagic diarrhoea. Hematological and serum biochemical parameters showed severe anaemia, leukocytosis and hypoproteinemia. Faecal floatation examination revealed eggs of Ancylostoma caninum.

The in vitro antimicrobial potency of the bacteriocin AS-48 is well documented, but its clinical application requires investigation, as its toxicity could be different in in vitro (haemolytic and antibacterial activity in blood and cytotoxicity towards normal human cell lines) and in vivo (e.g. mice and zebrafish embryos) models. Overall, the results obtained are promising.
